“Classic beach hotel, an older motel but with all the Santa Cruz beach easy going charm. Nostalgic, comfortable, great location, beach 100 yds away. The owner takes a lot of pride in the motel.”

“Adorable, quaint cottage stay with breakfast delivered to the room. We rented a 2 room cottage that allowed us to bring our dog. While the furnishings could use a bit of a refresh and it takes the hot water time to heat up, it was well accommodated with everything we needed and comfortable beds. The location is beautiful and peaceful and walkable to Capitola shops and restaurants. The Shadowbrook Inn taxi can pick up/drop off for dinner. We can't wait to visit again!”

“Loved staying here. We stayed for a single night. The week leading up to our stay we received informational texts that allowed us to communicate with the hotel staff. Check in was easy and the front desk associate was delightful. They allowed us to keep our car parked in the parking lot while we went and had a late lunch before check-in time. We stayed in room 100- its in a tucked away little corner and doesn't have a 'view' but the room was awesome. While it was a small room, it was laid out well and decorated adorable. You can tell they have been more recently renovated. The only funky things in the room (did not affect our stay at all) a light switch that didn't turn any lights or devices on or off, the face plate right inside the door was also not flus with the wall and I could fit my finger squarely behind it, and another ceiling face plate next to the smoke detector was not screwed in all the way and was hanging down a tad. Loved that we had a microwave and mini fridge in the room. Downside, we may have been charged for 2 bottles of water at the front desk- we should have asked, but the business card of information we were given at check-in alluded to being able top get ice and water from the front office. Would definitely stay again.”

“Stayed 3 nights for a family party which was 2 streets down. Very cute boutique hotel charming rooms are older but big. Very accommodating to their guests. I would only mark down for the water pressure in the showers. Very low.”

“Absolutely loved our giant room with a king sized bed! The full length private balcony was a very relaxing place to kick back and enjoy the mountain air. The pool and main hall was still under renovation while we were there, but we had a great time just relaxing and enjoying the area. The staff was very nice and we really enjoyed our stay.”

“Super kind, responsive ownership. Clean and cute cabins that can potentially sleep 5. Dog friendly. The river right next to it is beautiful. You can walk to a nice restaurant in under 90 seconds and to a nice grocery store and gas station in under three minutes. The cabin was very clean with nice furniture.
This isn't so much a complaint as it is a suggestion: the showers are very dark and can be a challenge for people that don't have the best vision. Perhaps a battery powered LED light installed in the shower would help”

“Why stay anywhere else in Santa Cruz? Best value by far with rooms having almost the same features for nearly half the price (excepting in room coffee service). Coffee served in the lobby until 11am. Swimming pool, restaurants across the street and a reasonably short walk to the Boardwalk.”

“Our room 129 is next to road but you cant hear the noise from outside makes our sleep comfortable. The room is spacious for foot traffic and our luggages. There are plenty of outlets for our gadgets, we dont have to struggle to wait for our turn. There's enough light too. There's tables and chairs for use. It would have been nice to stay longer.”
“It's a nice hotel with a pool and a great sunset view from the pool. I recommend. Breakfast is kinda meh but oh boy is it pretty. Flowers and palms. Eeeeeee!”

“As part of a 12-person golf group, the combination of the Inn at Pasatiempo and Pasatiempo Golf Club was phenomenal. We thoroughly enjoyed everything. The dinner at the Back Nine Bar and Grill was incredible. We will be back.”
“FANTASTIC!
We had our son and his fiances rehearsal dinner here! It was such a beautiful location, the hosts were AMAZING, there were plenty of amenities to accomodate a group, and you cant beat the amazing redwoood trees. We felt so cared for by the attention to detail from the hosts and could not have asked for a better experience!”

“Located conveniently off Highway 1. Rooms are incredibly spacious and comfortable. Warm and responsive staff ensure that the hospitality experience is top notch. The area seemed extremely safe but in any case the underground parking of the hotel doubly ensures the safety of your vehicle. All places in Santa Cruz and Capitola are within 15 minutes and not to mention the shopping mall right next to the hotel in case you've forgotten to carry essentials for the trip from home.”

“A pleasant, clean, and reasonably priced place to stay in Santa Cruz. Not a hotel full of amenities that you end up not using, but if you are looking for a spacious, clean and comfortable room, at a reasonable price, the Hitching Post should be high on your list. My room had a very comfortable king bed, large room, and a second room with a full kitchen. Shower was excellent, and a full walk in closet. All very clean and comfortable.”

“Was not able to stay this time but have in the past. Nevertheless, I was compelled to write a review for the gem at the front desk, Aidan! What a star. Taking the time to call me back when new availability opened. Much appreciated. Thank you, Aidan. Can’t wait to meet you when we next come to town! <3”

“Great location, the pool is a little weird as it's across the street and could use a good scrubbing. The grounds need attention. It's clean but clean out the fountain and put flowers in the baskets. Curb appeal is important. The room was clean and comfortable.”

“Stayed in room 130 in April 2025 and it was wonderful. There was no smell that I read about in other posts and the space was out of this world. Two bedrooms, one with a full size bed, the other with a full size, but the main area was a bit strange, but it maximizes the Ocean View. In the living room you have your coach, desk and lamps, but what is great is you also have a full size bed and the coach pulls out for more sleeping room.
The location is to die for, walking distance to about six types of food and fun shopping. You are close to a small market for groceries, an ice cream shop, Pizza, tacos, Thai Food and the iconic beach just steps away.
Parking is tight, but a blessing. Believe me the $20 for parking here is a bargain, and you don't have to worry about your car. One thing about parking is that the spaces are tight, so be careful.
Bring your own dishes, or just eat at the many restaurants.....that is easiest...you are on vacation after all.
We will be back. Oh and the price is fair for what you get...this was not my everyday stay.”
“This hotel was built by my family (A. Castro) and I have always wanted to see it. I have called a few times but no one answers. I have only been able to visit the outside of the building because the hotel has been closed every time I try to see it. I truly hope it does get restored, but sounds like that’s going to require a lot of time and money. Grants, perhaps? ?I would love to chat with the current owners sometime!”
“I realize I'm giving 5 stars to a 2.5 star property, but it's well deserved. We needed a last minute room in Santa Cruz while attending a show at UCSC. Found it on line. We were a little concerned about booking here due to the super low price.
When we arrived, we loved this property's location, ample parking & overall condition. The staff was friendly & professional. We were given an upstairs, large corner room with a King bed.
This property was perfect for what we needed.”

“This is a clean, affordable place to stay while you are in the Santa Cruz area. It is obvious the staff and owners take pride in giving guests a nice experience. Charming. Coffee, bath essentials, airy rooms all provided. I had a small fridge and iron, blow dryer. Other small thoughtful items included. Definitely will return.Rooms: Clean, lots of extra touchesNearby activities: Central to all Monterey Bay sights and attractions.Safety: Felt very safe for myself and my car.Walkability: Easy walk to harbor”
“Really reasonably priced motel for whatnot has to offer. I enjoyed my suite with fireplace and jacuzzi tub for only 195 in the summer! When other places were charging 3-400 for just a regular room!”
“This is an average room, but the location is fantastic. The bed was on the firmer side, and only one blanket was provided, but there is AC and heat in the room. Mini fridge and small microwave are provided, but no in-room coffee (luckily Ideal Cafe is just down the block). This is a great option if you aren't looking for an upscale experience and will be happy with a standard hotel room.”
“We decided to stay during the 4th of July weekend. Loved being in the Redwoods and having a castle next door was very cool. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was very outdated and definitely needed some upgrades from cracks in the flooring to the shower head coming apart from the wall. There was dirt and dust in the cracks and crevices. The beds were very cozy. No bugs. Breakfast was later then expected so if you think your going to eat before 8:30am...think again. It was also very slim pickings. I've stayed at other Quality Inns who had more variety. This one is basic toast, cereal, fruit and waffles. Overall I'd say its over priced but we were paying more for what was outside the walls then inside. (also could have been high priced because it was a holiday weekend) Nothing beats waking up with beautiful, tall trees everywhere. The pool area was nice and we enjoyed sitting around it. We were told it was heated...but I don't think it was. It was hot outside though so it didn't really matter at that time. We would stay again.”
“Very polite and attendant from desk crew. Everyone took really good care of the breakfast bar. I love that they keep the train station open for you 24 hours. You don’t find many hotels that are that courteous. They do allow dogs for a small fee and they are very pet friendly almost all the rooms are near the pet potty area. They hosted three franchise and three franchises had a time. Housekeeping also came in clutch. I needed quarters for the laundry machine and Other the front desk forgot to get memorial day change the housekeeping was prepared lol.”
