Its incredible plant diversity is a result of its complex geography and Mediterranean climate. California native plants are so well adapted to our climate—they thrive with less water, provide essential habitat for wildlife, and generally require fewer pesticides and fertilizers.

Learning more about how California’s native plants have been used by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years—for food, shelter, medicine, and tools—also gave me a deeper appreciation for the natural and cultural history of this place.
