About Theodore Payne Foundation

The Theodore Payne Foundation is a nonprofit nursery and education center specializing in California native plants and seeds, plus ceramic pots, soil, books, and gifts. It is considered a go-to native plant nursery in Los Angeles and the real deal for native plants. The foundation has great plants, including oak trees in a variety of sizes, lots of ground covers, flowers, drought tolerant shrubs, seeds, and tubers. It also sells items like honey and features an amazing aesthetic that celebrates restoring native habitats. The property includes walking trails that go above the garden, with a small plant walk in the front and a big hill in the back offering spectacular views. This is a great way to see native plants in their natural environment. The layout of planting is helpful, divided by categories like shrubs and shade-loving plants. Plant cards have useful icons indicating features like scent or if a plant is pollinator friendly. Knowledgeable and friendly docents and volunteers walk the grounds, providing extraordinarily helpful advice. They can assist with specific garden concerns, such as hillside erosion prevention or selecting fragrant native plants. Visitors are encouraged to do some homework beforehand and can bring a photo of their landscape for guidance. The foundation allows well-behaved dogs on leash. Prices are fantastic without any feeling of price gouging. It is a gift of a place and a wonderful foundation to support. After a visit, Pasadena for a bite is only about twenty minutes away.
