Wildly incompetent tax pro. We came in with a little bit of a tricky situation--a few 1099s, and a few invoices. John, our tax professional, was not clear about costs up front, as is indicated on the sign in the front. However, we would later realize that was the least of our problems. First of all, demonstrated a complete inability to remember what the 1099s were for, and what the invoices were for. We explained several times where each one came from (there were five in total,) and why they were for the amounts the were, and why there were so many. After the third time through the stack of papers, we just gave up. We do contractual creative work, and as he’s quite old I think he just literally could not comprehend the nature of the work. Additionally, he would show us a paper, start to describe it, and then trail off while still holding the paper, as though he was expecting us to finish the explanation. It was almost like he was having TIAs the entire time we were meeting.He then sent us on our way after about an hour, and said he'd give us a call in five days. Ten days later he called and asked for a lot of the information we discussed in person, including asking about the size of a home office again. We were told that we would get a call in a few days to come pick up our paper work. Twelve days after that we still hadn't received a call, so we made an appointment. He was running half an hour late due to an issue with the previous client, and once we finally were seen it was apparent he hadn't even begun the process of filing our paperwork. Mind you, he began the conversation by telling us that he wasn't going to file part of the return, because he was too busy, which I thought was a little silly coming from someone who I'm paying to file returns. (Imagine if you bought an ice cream, and then the person serving you just told you that lots of other people had also purchased ice cream, and so you wouldn't be getting any?) After muttering to himself for about an hour, he finally showed us a monsterously innacurate final tax statement, because he had neglected to include many of the deductions we had talked about in person and over the phone, and in person again when we came back.The worst part, however, was that he absolutely could NOT figure out how to use the computer, constantly blaming software errors for things such as papers not printing (his pop-up blocker was enabled) or drop down menus not appearing. We spent a significant amount of time (nearly 2 hours) in the tax office watching a man struggle to use very basic software programs. This did NOT inspire confidence in us, as we need to make sure things are done accutarly. I feel bad for John--it’s not his fault that he’s old and doesn’t understand how software works. However, it’s his job to provide a software-based service to his clients, and he was unable to do so. The blame for this falls partly on H & R block--they need to make sure the people they hire are able to understand the nature of the work of their clients--but also on John himself. There is no excuse to be that inept at operating simple software if your job depends on it.We will absolutely not be back, and will be filing 14157s with the IRS. Our experience was so bad I’m actually electing to file MORE taxes!

Called with a simple question of if they do estate taxes. The person on the phone refused to answer the question or give me a supervisor when asked.
