I pass through Rocky town several time per year on my way to or returning from Pueblo. Though I live near Tucson in the winter, I spend my summers in Folsom, NM just 12 miles south of the state border and have several paths to travel this drive. I prefer this way because I get to stop at a great coffee shop, The Coffea Shop, a mere 200 feet further down the sidewalk from Chandler&Fable. I wonder if they know about the current miff over Claude Fable 5?

I did not know that this bookstore has been around for at least 4 years. That's just about when I stopped in the town on my first drive through. The coffee shop fellow at the checkout counter told me about the neighboring bookstore since I had mentioned how nice it was that this coffee shop had books for sale in addition to fantastic pastries and outstanding coffee drinks.

Well, I walked out the door and 200 feet down the sidewalk to a wonderful surprise: one of the finest boutique bookstore and gifts stores that I have ever seen. And I have seen a decent number in my many years.....

It helps that I'm a book collector and have been since I was 16 and started collecting books for my future library. It now numbers over 2,000 books, periodicals, and abstracts. My oldest book was printed in 1669 on a hand-operated press. I bought it in Bath, England, at Baytun Brothers Bindery in 1969.

What a fine surprise to discover a quality bookstore and gift shop in such an out-of-the-usual-way town like Rocky Ford! It gives me hope and inspiration that perhaps there is a secret Renaissance happening that might extend to more and more small towns where readers, yes book readers, exist and want more.

When you drive through Rocky Ford you simply must stop at this store. Buy a book or gift for a young child you love, and have a pastry and coffee next door. You might even decide to check the available real estate because as times get harder, small towns get better.”
