Mystic Seaport Museum is the largest maritime museum in the United States and possibly Connecticut's number one tourist attraction. It is an exceptional indoor and outdoor living history museum, a re-creation of a 19th-century seafaring village and shipyard. The museum features a wide range of buildings, exhibits, shows, and interactives with tons of boats, buildings, and artifacts. Visitors can explore old ships, see an old blacksmith shop, a sail shop, and live workshops where boats are restored. It is a great place for the whole family, with areas designated for children.
The museum is very large and engrossing. A visit requires at least three hours at a rushed pace, but one could easily spend the entire day or even three or four full days to see everything, including all the shows and tours. Tickets are not cheap but are worth it and are valid for seven days. The staff and volunteers are extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and well-informed, reflecting strong company values.
As an outdoor museum, open hours vary greatly by season, and ticket pricing varies depending on age and membership. Some attractions have stair access only. The museum offers plenty of free parking in large lots. It is a must-see for any history fan or boat lover.
