I had such a great experience. I had just finished Bill Bryson's book on Shakespeare where he mentions this museum and knew I had to visit (really recommend reading this book before visiting!). Beautiful museums and grounds, and the interfaces for informing folks about Shakespeare are really well-designed and engaging. I would also like to shout out the docent Sarah, who was one of the most engaging museum docent I've ever experienced and had a great sense for when to engage folks and when to let them peruse on their own - she helped make the visit even more accessible for me even though I hadn't even planned on relying on a docent as a resource at all! The gift shop was also gorgeous and I bought a small collection of First Folio works printed on lovely artifical paper than I plan to have framed. Thank you for a fantastic morning!!

My brother, who was visiting DC, and I had our first visit to the Folger Theater and were excited to see Twelfth Night. The production was fantastic. It was beautifully staged with a talented, engaging cast. The attached museum is also fascinating, and overall, the Folger is a lovely space with a lot to offer.
Unfortunately, our experience was dampened by an unpleasant encounter with an incredibly rude audience member. Upon returning to the theater after intermission, my brother tried to quietly unwrap a pastry upon returning to his seat, and a woman nearby aggressively shushed us. Given that we were significantly younger and the only people of color in our section, the interaction felt racially charged and left us feeling unwelcome.
It’s disheartening to encounter this kind of behavior in a theater dedicated to the arts, which should be an open, inclusive, and thoughtful space for all. While the venue and performance were wonderful, I hope the Folger works toward fostering a more genuinely welcoming environment for every guest.

Do not miss!
Started the visit in the cafe to knock out some work and was so pleasantly surprised by every single room in this place!
I am by no means a Shakespeare aficionado or enthusiast but this entire collection was so well curated and easy to navigate I didn’t want to leave. The walls are covered in recreations of illustrations, the lighting is dim but still light enough to read. And… It’s not just Shakespeare!
Seriously a vast collection. All the docents were pleasant and so knowledgeable. There is also a theatre with performances daily.
Would and will return! Can’t wait to tell everyone I know to visit!

Excellent Shakespeare resources, family friendly. Very knowledgeable docents and staff. We enjoyed sleuthing to reveal hidden pictures, learning about the development of the printing press, examining the map of Shakespeare and delighting in the art both inside and on the outside of the building. Unfortunately, viewing the theater was not possible. They said they were preparing for a show and it could be viewed another time- this assumes we can make multiple visits. Hopefully they can come up with a solution in the future.

The old and the new come together in beautiful harmony.
Tickets should be booked in advance, especially during performances, as it can get quite crowded at times.
Public transportation can be a bit inconvenient, but it’s about a 20-minute walk from Union Square if you’re up for it.

Was not planning on coming here, but I happened to walk past it and decided to go in. Pretty cool collection on Shakespeare and it was awesome seeing the old theater.

A fantastic place for Shakespeare enthusiasts! The library itself is beautiful, and the exhibits are fascinating, offering a unique look into the life and works of the Bard. The setting is also quite charming, with a lovely courtyard. That said, it’s a bit pricey, so it may not be for everyone, but if you're a fan of literature or history, it’s definitely worth the visit. A great place to get lost in the world of Shakespeare!

This was my first time visiting…very Shakespearian. The one thing that I like is cafe. It is spacious enough to be comfortable and lounge, listen to music, read or hang with a friend.
