“The major advantage of using an independent pharmacy is that the owners are on-site and can make decisions without deferring to a Corporate legal department. Recently when I changed insurance companies, I found that my old insurance was denying claims even while the policy was still in force. As a result, I ended up without a valid prescription for my BP medicine, which is dangerous to interrupt. Pharmacist Luke Zippi, in accordance with Federal regulations, took it upon himself to give me a few days worth of medication which covered me until the new insurance kicked in. In my personal experience, chain drug stores routinely deny such requests and refer you back to your physician for new prescriptions and new coverage. It is a huge advantage to deal with a family-owned pharmacy where they actually know you personally, and can act as your advocate when insurance systems are arbitrary or indifferent.”
