I am going to Japan on November 6th 2019. You can only get the rail pass up to 3 months before your departure date, so I purchased it August 6th. Yasuji Hanada promptly emailed me to let me know it would have to be used by November 6th, but I arrive the 7th. Saved me a huge hassle. Thanks!
