The total amount I paid was not the total amount presented to me by the associate at the counter. I was told that the total I would pay was about $500 but they very conveniently emitted the fact that their third party, through who I originally booked, had deducted $300 from my account as a “deposit” and I later found out that the $300 was not part of my “total.” It was the price of the rental and my “total” at the counter was only insurance and fees. Of course the verbal gymnastics were led by a sheet of paper with fine print that I was obligated to sign in order to complete the transaction. So I’m sure that means I have no recourse for any refund. So, it was misleading and dishonest and I won’t be renting a car from them again. The car wasn’t in great shape either. What I thought was going to be around $45-$50 per day ended up being $100 per day. I’ll use Turo again in the future.

People act like they are on drugs. Tried to charge me 900$ after I had already paid for my online booking. Then refused to rent meA car without a 500$ debit card deposit. Then when I’m Trying to figure out an alternative they started to close the gates on us. Left a Disabled Veteran and a 10 year old kid stuck in the middle of the night. Thanks for nothing Jerks.

I made a reservation for a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle and even paid for it. However, when I went to pick up the car, they insisted on giving me a car of a much lower class. To make matters worse, they deceived me by falsely claiming that the lower-class car was capable of going up to Mauna Kea, a mountain known for its challenging terrain. The truth was that they didn't have a car in their fleet that was allowed to access the mountain. I am extremely disappointed and frustrated with their dishonesty and will never consider renting anything from this company again.

Agree with the comments. DON'T rent from them, horrible customer service and lie about not being charged for an upgrade due to car not being available then they charge you more than what you originally agreed to pay. They don't address your issue and give you the run around on what the agreement was. Rent from anywhere else but them. I will never use them again.

Paid for a car in full while on the island visiting my Hawaiian son and new granddaughter only to be told I couldn’t rent the car because my credit card had my maiden name. I had several proofs of identification and they would not except it. Hertz had no cars because of the arrival of a cruise ship. Luckily budget had one and gave me a Kama’aina rate. Will never rent from dollar again and the ladies were rude but thanks to the ALOHA of budget I was able to pick my husband up in Kona who was waiting at the airport!

Just rented a car from Dollar in Hilo. The car wouldn't start every other time so I returned it to swap out the key. They claimed I got the key wet and charged my 250 even though the key was clearly dry and I never got it anywhere near water. I'll be avoiding them in the future.

Kelsey was extremely rude. Wanted us to stand in an hour-long line to return a key instead of just letting us know there was an unmarked drop box behind the office. Do not rent from Dollar or Thirfty. Terrible customer treatment. Bad attitudes from all staff members. The shuttle driver tried to charge us $10 a person for the FREE shuttle. Totally corrupt.

The stuff Junior is extremely rude to customers. They didn't have the car we rent and degrade our car and say it's a similar model??? He had a very bad attitude and kept telling us to take it or leave, because he knew that we cannot get a car from any other company. They are just bullying their customers!

Reserved a car 2 months ahead ..I went to the counter and there wasn't even a worker.. had to go to thrifty because they take care of both for some reason. I was told there isn't any cars and waiting for returns. Stuck here for hours and no cars. Wasted a whole day's vacation. I hope I can get a car and not stuck at the airport.

Our car was infested with cockroaches. We’re from O’ahu so we wouldn’t be bothered by one or two…but there was a whole commune living in our Ford Escape. Unfriendly service when checking out. The only reason they get two stars is their proximity to the terminal and being able to swiftly exit and get on with life.

Summary: Make sure you understand and have each item you pay for explained to you, do not rely on what the agent says because it may not match what is on paper AT ALL and the statement they give you only has acronyms. I see a lot of good reviews on here but I really do not understand how something like this could happen by mistake..I spent the entire trip having no idea that I paid for full premium insurance AND the damage waiver, neither of which I asked for.So just to help anyone else in a similar situation, I'll explain what happened. We reserved/paid for a car rental through Expedia. When we got there, the agent said payment did not go through and they didn't receive anything from Expedia. Despite having found our reservation, it was marked unpaid. We didn't have any internet connection so we could not confirm that our bank processed the Expedia payment. Agent said that we could just charge the original amount at the counter in order to pick up our vehicle, and simply get credited back if we double-paid and show that our reservation was paid for already (in hindsight this doesn't make the most sense but the agent made it seem like it was fine and just a processing error)When we returned the car with proof of payment through Expedia, they acted like this conversation never happened. They showed that they did receive payment through Expedia and said that we asked for full coverage premium insurance AND the daily damage waiver fee, neither of which we asked for in any way because we got insurance through Expedia. The total they charged us looked legit because it was similar to our original reservation cost plus some state fees (which I didn't calculate, I just trusted ). The statement they give you is also entirely labeled with acronyms and I regretfully did not ask about each one, I just trusted what the agent was telling me verbally. We just feel very taken advantage of and learned some important lessons from this, and don't want anyone else to experience it. If you must use this company, don't pay Dollar ANYTHING extra without understanding exactly what it is ON PAPER. Good luck.

Quick and informative. There was a long line and the attendant was efficient in getting through it. They even brought the car around, which was an added bonus. Lost a star because the car wasn't completely clean inside, but not bad considering how busy they were.

The van that l was issued was a little damaged on the outside dents and scaches. With 43000 miles it's my opinion that this particular vehicle should have been replaced with a new model., especially for what they charge for a five day rental 1,115. With a basic rental plan.
