Two trips to Hilo within a couple weeks. Made pre-paid reservations for both. They screwed me twice.
RENTAL 1: Showed up at desk with a drivers license and a credit card - just like the reminder told me. THEY REFUSED TO GIVE ME A CAR because I didn't have the card used to make the reservation. Seemed like a pretext.
I contacted Hertz corporate for a refund and they emailed back thanking me for contacting them. No refund. I am now contesting through my credit card.
RENTAL 2: Showed up with the credit card used for the reservation and got a car. They put a $200 hold on the credit card. I returned the car on July 25. THEY STILL HAVEN'T REMOVED THE HOLD.

We were very dissatisfied with our rental car experience at the Hertz location in Hilo, Hawaii. It wasn't until we arrived and picked up the vehicle that we were informed that it was not allowed to drive to the top of Mauna Kea. The only reason we booked a 4WD vehicle was precisely this. There was no indication when booking that this would not be allowed. We were also not allowed to drive to Green Sand Beach and Waipio Valley, which was also not stated online.
The vehicle itself was very poorly equipped. It had no central locking and the boot door was difficult to open as it had a strange latch. Overall, the vehicle did not meet our expectations in any way. This experience was disappointing and severely affected our travel plans.

Pretty standard car rental experience. Our initial vehicle had a dead keyfob, so we received a prompt replacement. Check in was fast as well as checkout.

I am so sad I didn't read all the comment before renting at this Hertz as they had scammed me on the same LDW and LIS insurance that another customer had got into few months ago.
I was just picking up the car and signed my liability. They charged me extra of $160 after a returned and there were insurance added without notifying me when I picked the car. Such a bad way to make money. The front desk is just too bad to do this to customers.

The desk host is the worst person I met during my entire Hawaiian trip. Avoid Hertz, there are plenty of other better rental car around that are surely nicer with their customers.

Hertz employee racist and ran out the office try to hit customers.
I received unfair treatment as well as racial slurs at the Hertz office in Hilo, Hawaii. The employee’s attitude was aggressive and discriminatory, and she even stormed out of the office and attempted to assault me after I asked her if she was discriminating against me. I even had to call the police to help me out of my situation and I don't know why Hertz would give their customers such an experience. It happened on March 19, 2024 at 7PM Hawaii time, I asked the employee's name and work number in front of the police officers but she wouldn't disclose it so I had to publish her shift hours. I hope Hertz can give me a reasonable resolution. Hopefully other customers will avoid contact with this employee.

Hertz’s employee racism and tried to punch customer, happened in the evening of March 19th. We had to call local police to protect us due to the aggressive behaviors from Hertz’s employee. So guys, protect yourself when you dealing with Hertz!

Do it early. If the Hertz parking space is full, you can park somewhere else and talk.

This was my first car rental experience in Hawaii. It was not good nor bad. The first car i rented was full of bugs (small cockroaches). I discovered it the next night. I did a complaint and got exchanged my car. Thankfull that I was staying close to the airport. If you live far, it could be a problem.

BEWARE. They scammed me and may do the same to you. I explicitly did NOT agree to the insurance (LDW) or the "premium road service", totaling $45 per day. I did not carefully look at the agreement before signing off - my bad. I was in a hurry. I only realized it after returning the car. I called the number but was redirected the national number, still waiting a resolution. I talked with someone who knows about Hertz in Hilo and they said this is a common scam, and occurs because the employees there make commission on this upsells.

Roxanne helped me tremendously. I had messed up my reservation and she made sure I was taken care of. Best experience I've had with any car rental.
