Island Nation - Ma Uka, Ma Kai is a vibrant shop located along Hilo Bay front that offers a wide selection of locally sourced gifts and cultural items. Visitors can find an array of products celebrating Hawaii’s natural beauty and rich culture, including jewelry, clothing, hats, accessories, stationery, stickers, and books. The shop is known for its incredible collection of Hawaiian and Polynesian literature, covering topics such as native Hawaiian language, history, culture, navigation, surfing, and spirituality. Many of these books are written by Hawaiians, offering authentic insights into island life. In addition to gifts, the shop features art, crafts, card games, and body products, all of which highlight the island’s traditions and stories. It is a place where one can immerse themselves in native island culture and conservation, creating a spiritual connection that feels like ancestors are smiling. The shop also supports local makers and upcycled jewelry, making it a hub for unique, high-quality items. Adjacent to the shop is a community center that hosts events, supporting the lāhui and providing a space for community gathering. The overall vibe of Island Nation is one of authenticity, culture, and support for local artisans, making it a must-visit for those interested in deepening their understanding of Hawaiian heritage.
My favorite selection of locally sourced gifts and things. Cant go wrong. Love the hairclips, stickers, cards, stationary, accessories, jewelry, clothes, books... P much anything you want. Also the community center they host next door is fantastic. We need more third spaces for hosting events and supporting lāhui.

I’m born and raised in Hilo and this is where I’ll be recommending visitors come for gifts. Amazing selection of products celebrating the beauty of the nature and culture of Hawai’i. This is not a budget stop, but worth supporting.

This is the island equivalent of Posman’s Books in NYC. New favorite.
