Our stay at the Wild Ginger Hotel was wonderful. The hotel exudes a quaint charm with its lovely views of the ocean and a touch of jungle ambiance, offering a unique and picturesque setting. While the facilities could benefit from a bit of an overhaul, the overall atmosphere more than makes up for it.
The staff were friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with a smile. The free breakfast was a nice touch, with decent food to start the day off right. Although the rooms lack air conditioning, the ceiling fans provided a comfortable night's sleep. The 3 hotel cats were friendly and keep the geckos at bay.
This is a great hotel to sleep (not a room to lounge in all day) while staying in Hilo.
Rooms: The rooms are a bit small and only offer a bed and a bathroom, but thats all you really need. Rustic, charming, and old world Hawaiian.
Safety: Doors have a door latch and the lobby locks after 10. Never felt unsafe.
Noteworthy details: Windows don't all close so a few insects might accompany you from time to time.

A little TLC and this place could be magical.
Lovely historical building, nice decor, and beautiful surrounding gardens. And the staff were friendly!
No A/C which would be fine but it’s just too humid. If the rooms were resealed and the bathroom vent was replaced the room might be perfectly fine with just a dehumidifier. Also bugs and evidence of past mold.
The breakfast had a decent variety, not everything was great though.
Decent enough for the price! But definitely needs some work.

The reviews are accurate, avoid this hotel. This place has potential but for what’s provided it is grossly overpriced. Thin walls with creeky flooring making it very loud. It’s a very old hotel and it shows. The worst part was no hot water in the room, we had to use a dirty communal bathroom to shower and it was awful. If it were $70 a night maybe I could get passed all the flaws but at more than $150 forget it!

Do not book!!! Once you book, you never be able to cancel. No refunds back. I booked directly but couldn’t go due to the earthquake hitted my town. Three months before the booking date, I send several emails, several messages via their chat, but no response at all. I made phone calls many times but no answer. My friend living in Hilo visited them several times, but no staff. I am angry that they charged full amount.

We stayed there in Fabruary 2024. The hotel is dirty and old. The room is too way diffrent that what is on the photo advertisment.
We did not have a hot water in the room at all!!!!! We asked the desk representative and she tald as to wait 10 more minutes to hot water comes, but it's never happaned. The desk representative was so inndiferent and rude. She was never n her working place, she just hided in the back room and scrolled her phone all the time. She lied to us. She told that she does not know how to call to manager.
So we had reservation for 2 nights but have decided to leave as it was so noisy during night and impossible to take shower. We asked for refund, the girl on the desk during night was nice and tried to help us, she called a manager. The manager promised us a refund but we have not got it yet!
We called to the hotel and the desk girl pretended that she does not hear us. Such a shame!
I want a refund immidiatly!!!!!

Super unfriendly and lazy receptionists.
Rooms are really dirty (windows/bathrooms), shower is cold and staff is mentioning it will be come warm after 20 min. That's not the case. We wased 500 gallons of water waiting for it.
Manager Jason did not keep it's promise to refund.
Nobody cares pretty much what is going on there.
Do yourself a favour at go somewhere else.

Photos are a bait and switch; hotel room might have looked like the photos they post if the photos were 20 yrs old. Room is tiny, bugs everywhere and bathroom is filthy with a door that doesn’t close. The whole building is dilapidated and floor and rooms are tilted because of a sagging foundation. We stayed one night out of 5 and we couldn’t stay any longer before going to a real hotel. Services ladies are very pleasant and nice but hotel is more like a run-down hostel. Avoid at all costs. Oh and also the night we stay, someone committed suicide unfortunately. Location doesn’t feel safe either with drug dealers down the corner. In general, don’t stay in Hilo on Big Island; stay on the western side in Kona.

We were there for four nights in January 2023. The hotel is easy to reach. It's simple, the rooms are clean, the service from the staff is great, and important: breakfast is included.
The hotel exudes a charm like it comes from the 40s or 50s. All that's missing is that Fred Astair shows up and asks how you're doing.
The overnight price is unbeatable.
In front of the hotel there is a parking lot for hotel guests' cars. WiFi is available in the hotel.
If you like, you can study Hawaiian carving art, as there is a lot on display.
Rooms: The rooms are not huge. There is a double bed, a simulation of a closet, and a small bathroom with a shower. It takes a while for hot water to come, but it comes.
Walkability: You can walk to some restaurants and bars
Food & drinks: Breakfast is simple. Coffee and tea, juice, bread for toasting, jams

I was excited to stay here but as soon as we arrived I got creepy vibes. No one at front desk and we had to wait at least 15 min before she arrived from one of the rooms (I think the staff live here) we got a room and I just wanted a comfy clean bed to rest my head we had a long day. I went to pull the sheets back and I found SEVERAL different types of hairs in all layers of the bed and pillows. On top of that this place is right by the main hwy so expect loud traffic noise. We complained to the front desk lady who again was not there and down in the rooms below. She didn’t believe me! So she checked the bed and she confirmed it was nasty, she apologized and gave us another room. I really tried to give this place a chance. The next room had the SAME gross hairs in the bed sheets. We went to the front desk and asked for a refund. She said the owner should give it since she saw the hairs too and she apologize and said she’ll have to call her boss who isn’t on property and isn’t answering. I called a few days later they said he still hasn’t answered. I emailed and called for weeks with no response. They must’ve blocked me this is Clearly a scam place. Thank god my bank was able to fight this charge for me or else I never would have gotten my money back. DO NOT STAY HERE!
Rooms: Not clean found several different types of hairs in two beds
Noteworthy details: This place is a scam!! Dirty rooms and Loud traffic noise from hwy next door. Will say sure to a refund then block you and ignore you.

Don’t stay here. The place is very run down and poorly maintained — nothing like the photos online.

My new favorite hotel on Big Island! Set in a mature tropical garden with an amazing vintage Hawaii vibe. Old but awesome! This place has a sole. Not at all like so many cookie-cutter hotels you find today. The staff is kind and attentive. Absolutely loved the decor of the rooms and grounds. Well thought out and thoughtfully designed. A truly one-of-a-kind experience. Close walking distance to everything downtown Hilo has to offer. Wildly affordable for such a great experience!
Rooms: Eclectic and authentic vintage Hawaii vibe. Mature tropical garden setting.
Walkability: Super close to everything that downtown Hilo has to offer.
Noteworthy details: Crazy good deal for such an awesome experience!

You get what you pay for,,or maybe a bit less. No wiFi, no bathroom door, no hot water in #20, windows don't close and hiway noise is outrageous. Screens have holes, as well as the walls. Maintenance must be performed by a seven-year-old. BUT, in stark contrast, the bed linens were crisp n' clean, and the breakfast was delicious. If it's just you, OK. If you have a complainer in your group ,,,DON'T! The reviews by "Local Guides"?...they must be on crack.

The hotel is nice. The rooms are clean and good. However, note that it is old style and shows Hawaiian culture more. E.g. there was no TV in my room. The price is also reasonable. So, before booking, please keep in mind that it is an old, Hawaiian-style Hotel and not a luxury resort. The building is full of history, character and aloha. It is truly a unique Hawaiian experience. The girls are counter were also helpful and nice.
And yes, I couldn't find any bugs.

We spent 2 nights of our honymoon there. The place isn't what you see on the websites. It's not been taken care of, and it also reflects on the rooms.
Our room was dirty.
The bathroom had BLOOD fingerprints on the door and mold on the roof. There were empty shampoos and soaps on the shower, clearly not cleanded beforehand.
The wood and paint from the walls pilling off, the freezer disgusting, with something melted and frozen back.
The staff told us they were going to refund as the night, but since then, we are still waiting. The manager is impossible to contact.
NOT RECOMMEND IT AT ALL.
