About Illinois Aviation Museum

The Illinois Aviation Museum, established in 2004 and located in Hangar One at Bolingbrook’s Clow International Airport, is a popular destination for aviation enthusiasts and families alike. Open on weekends from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, the museum offers a wide variety of exhibits and activities that appeal to all ages. Visitors can explore numerous aircraft, including WWI and WWII planes, with opportunities to get up close to fighter planes like the Avenger and sit inside cockpit areas. The museum showcases model airplanes, flight simulators, and even walk-throughs of certain hangers displaying ongoing projects, engines, electrical systems, and dioramas. Authentic artifacts, reproductions, and tents featuring weaponry, bombs, and military equipment from WW II and Vietnam add to the educational experience. The museum also hosts events with plane and helicopter rides, which can be purchased online or on-site, with reasonable prices. During special occasions, all hangers have activities, including demonstrations and displays of work-in-progress aircraft. Visitors often enjoy picnicking on the grass near the runway while watching planes, and food vendors, including Charlie’s restaurant, offer various snacks and meals, although seating can be crowded and wait times long. The staff is friendly and accommodating, creating a welcoming atmosphere. While parking is a bit far from the hangers and some facilities like restrooms could improve, the overall experience is highly positive. Many visitors find the museum to be a fun, informative, and engaging place that fosters a strong sense of community among aviation lovers. Despite large crowds during events, the passion and pride of the volunteers and staff make the Illinois Aviation Museum a worthwhile visit for all interested in aviation history and aircraft.
