About Trap Door Theatre

Trap Door Theatre is a Chicago theater committed to seeking out challenging and obscure works. Whether a forgotten European classic, an international project rarely seen in the United States, or an untarnished piece of American literature, Trap Door seeks diverse voices and presents them through innovative expression. They mix established and imaginative techniques to illustrate the absurdities of living in today's society. With only 42 seats, Trap Door offers a truly intimate theater experience, where the audience is right on top of the stage and the cast can be right in their face. The plays presented are often avant-garde and edgy, challenging the audience's thoughts and beliefs. While not every production may hit the mark, the passion and dedication of the cast are evident. Trap Door's 30th-anniversary celebration was a special event, featuring champagne, hors-d'oeuvres, and a chance to mingle with the cast and other audience members. The play itself, "Mother Courage and Her Children" by Bertolt Brecht, was deeply provocative and not at all expected. The performances, particularly by Rashaad A. Bond, Bill Gordon, and Kevin Webb, were highly praised, with the actors seamlessly transitioning between characters and delivering powerful, unforgettable moments. Overall, Trap Door Theatre provides a unique and engaging theater experience, offering a platform for diverse voices and innovative expression. Whether you're a seasoned theatergoer or seeking a new and challenging experience, Trap Door is a must-visit destination in Chicago.
