Saturday afternoon, 4:50 pm. Used to buy here every week. Now I live 40 min away. Was semi-close by and drove 20 min out of my way to come to my favorite butcher for some prosciutto. ?. Walked in and was told “we clean the slicer 15 min before we close.”
Mentioned I live in the city and that I’d driven over specifically for this.
Was told “ if you call ahead, we could slice it for you before you get here.”
Had been ready to drop $150 on an extravagant treat I’d not get elsewhere— as Homestead has been my fave for years.
Mentioned the amount I planned to spend and asked how long it takes them to clean the slicer. “About 10 minutes.”
The 2 young gentlemen and 1 young lady “working” preferred to stand around chatting rather than slice $150 worth of meat and the. clean the slicer. (Literally — they were chatting when I walked in, two of the three continued chatting while the other one told me they were apparently too busy to actually serve me, and they went back to chatting together while doing nothing else as I tapped out this review, sitting on a stool in the front of the shop.)
Won’t be back.

I was only a periodic customer but recently I made a cassoulet and my primary plan for sourcing the meat fell through. The team at Homestead really helped me select the needed ingredients, which differed from the printed recipe, but exceeded in texture and flavor of the dish. They even advised - the day of - on some cooking tips when I got nervous! Anyway, a loyal customer has been created.

"Artisanal" is an overused word, but there really is an artisan -- an artist, really -- behind Homestead Meats. Ehran, the owner, is exacting about the quality and cut of the fresh meat he sells, and his sausages and other charcuterie are unique, and uniquely good. Ask for his advice about how to cook them, and then follow it -- you'll love the results. The rest of the staff are dedicated to the craft of butchery, too. Come with an open mind -- it's a small shop, and they may not always have the exact cut you want, although you can always call and order ahead (I just did). But no matter what, you will get personal attention, and leave with high quality, locally produced meat.

I give 10* for the product and the cleanliness of the store!
However, the owner is rather condescending perhaps I call it rude. The team is too pushy, I spend my hard earned money in their store and support a mom and pop shop!!
The female associate is very kind and friendly.
I feel like I am purchasing a car in that store! Anxiety ? ?

Meat quality is good, the owner is rude. During the holiday rush, he waved his hand at me and told me to come back next week for anything else I might need. I gave him another chance and the next time he was just as rude. I will not be back.

Nestled in downtown Evanston, a true butchery that provides great products with even better service.Locally sourced, different meats are carefully transformed to sausages, cold cuts, and more.Very reasonably priced, you can always trust the food and the advice to end up with healthy, nutritious, and nourishing meals.Try it out - you will not be disappointedGil

Best butcher shop in Chicagoland, hands down. He makes everything in house, puts in the hours, and prices everything fairly. What a joy to know that butchers like this are still a thing here in Chicago!

Great selection of meats. Might have been the best pork tenderloin I've ever bought.

Homestead Meats is one of our favorite butcher shops. We first visited Homestead Meats last year. We noticed that they carried beef bacon, so we thought we would pick up some while we were in town. Turns out that was the best beef bacon that we have ever had. So when we knew we would be back in town, we thought we would place an order for some more beef bacon. I called and spoke to Ehran who is also the owner. I was hoping to order about 10 pounds of beef bacon. Ehran explained that they work with small batches with products from local farms and while he could prepare an order that size, he would need more time. So we settled on having a few pounds put aside. When we arrived at Homestead Meats, they had our bacon ready. It was vacuum sealed and ready for us to take home. Even though they were running low on product due to the holidays, they still had some beef bacon in their case. So we decided to pick up another pound of bacon, some sausages, and beef jerky. Everything looked really good and there are several options to select from including cheeses, stocks and cooking essentials. We loaded up our cooler and look forward to doing that again next time we are in town.

I stopped in 20 minutes before closing, 2 days before Christmas looking for a steak for Christmas dinner. The owner was working and he explained that they were (understandably!!!) sold out of most things -- which is what i was expecting to find but that he had a Delmonico steak I could buy. He even offered to vacuum it for me if I wanted to come back the next day -- super knowledgeable, friendly, beautiful cuts of meat, sourced locally. Very happy with my experience.
