Reserving a vehicle does NOT guarantee it will be there at the time of you requested. This location is a Penske hub in Home Depot Evanston. They’re powerless to Penske’s system. What I’m learning (and this has happened at other rental agencies) is your reservation is when they HOPE they have a vehicle available. Take your chances…if they have what you requested…great! But be prepared to either wait for a vehicle to be available, or to have to go to another location.

I want to make clear up front: the following review is not a reflection of the in-store front line staff, they did a great job.Booked a high top van, local rental, 2 months in advance. Two days before, a manager calls to tell me, he doesn't have a cargo van, would I take a 12' box truck for the same price. I was on a team meeting and didn't take down his name, my mistake, but I agreed.Day of pick up, first thing I noticed, there is the exact cargo van I booked sitting in the parking lot. But I thought they didn't have one?Second problem, counter employee says whoever re-entered my reservation made it a one-way and they can't give me the 12' box for a local rental. So I end up with a 16' box, which cost me more in gas and tolls, and was harder to drive and park.Once again, the in-store guys did a great job. This review is not a reflection on them, but I probably bably won't rent from Penske again.

Book for reservation for reefer truck 2 WEEKS before, received confirmed email. So I plan ahead, ordered all my stuff then 12 hrs before the pick up time they called and say no truck available. WHAT AN IRRESPONSIBLE COMPANY! NOT TRUSTED COMPANY AND NEVER GOING BACK TO BOOK FOR RESERVATION TO PENSKE. VERY INCOMPETENT, UNRELIABLE ,IRRESPONSIBLE , AND POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. They dont know how to honor confirmed reservation. They will not help you and they dont care ! This company is not to be trusted ! Bad experienced with them and should be given negative stars .Just an advise don't go for this company and you will be upset!

Rented a Ford Transit 250 high roof cargo van to move stuff from Brooklyn to Chicago and returned it here because it was the cheapest drop off location (would have paid >$100 extra to return in Chicago; grateful for the Penske phone rep who helped me find the best deal). The Penske counter is the same as the Home Depot tool rental counter, and the guy who helped me out was very kind, friendly, and had some fun dad-like jokes prepared as we inspected the rental together. (He also writes noir fiction and I'm bummed I've forgotten the name of his book; would like to check it out). I filled the tank at the grocery just north of the Home Depot, which seemed to be the cheapest in the vicinity -- but wish I'd also filled up right before entering Illinois, as the tank is huge and Indiana was way cheaper. Anyway, wouldn't hesitate to rent from or return to this spot! Glad I went with Penske; Budget was cheaper but they don't guarantee the vehicle you select will be there, and I had a great experience at both pick up and drop off as well as a sparkling clean, brand new van (I think they're just starting their cargo van program, so they're all fairly new).

There are few things I hate more than moving. Thanks to Penske and Home Depot for making this day even worse . I'm not sure if this was a Home Depot issue or a Penske issue. Or both. Penske rents out trucks at this Home Depot in Evanston. I had to move my art studio from one location to another. I was at the Home Depot at 7:30am, and picked up my truck. No issue at that point. Friendly, fast. The truck seemed fine. I drove down the street about a mile to my art studio and we load up the truck in about an hour or less. We next drive to my condo about 10 miles away which is on the way to the new studio, and load up a few things for about another hour or less. We are ready to go to my new studio! I'm excited! I try to start the truck and the engine just clicks. My bf's family owns a trucking business in his home country and the first words out of his mouth are "it's the engine." We try again. No start, just clicking. The engine appears to be dead. No lights were kept on, btw, except the hazard lights. I call Penske's 24 hour emergency service...there's a 40 minute wait to get hold of someone. I leave my number for them to call me back. We continue to try to start the engine. Just continuous clicks that eventually stop. I'm sitting there with a dead truck full of stuff I need to move. In the meantime my bf and nephew walk over to Menards which is a block away from my condo and pick up a little battery charger device that apparently starts trucks. Who knew!! Before they returned however, I pressed the OnStar button in the truck as I wasn't aware it was there all this time. I was on hold with OnStar for some time as they tried reaching Penske, and eventually they hung up. My nephew and bf figured out how to start the vehicle with the battery device, albeit the engine just barely flipped over. So, we are an hour delayed (more $ to pay nephew) but thankfully on our way. It could have been worse! As we were on our way to my new studio, OnStar called back. They were friendly and sympathetic. They said they tried getting hold of Penske too, but were unable. I'm so glad there's an OnStar button in the truck Anywho, as we approach our destination, Penske calls back and I explained what happened. He told me to keep the truck running while we unload, as stopping the engine could risk it not starting again. So we kept it running. I think it took less than two hours to do all that. We get in truck and return to Home Depot. So here is the worst part, if that's even possible at this point. I explain what happened to the employee and HE ACTS LIKE I AM LYING TO HIM. Why the fck am I going to lie about this sort of thing? He was defensive instead of at least just apologizing for renting me their sh!tty truck. And then he asked why I didn't put gas in the tank. Well let's see, you rented me out a truck that died, and Penske told me to keep the truck running while I unloaded. What more explanation do you need? I almost hesitated to write this review but I'm just so tired of rude people and crappy businesses. I'll stop there.

Employees who work here are kind of rude. There's plenty of other places where you can rent a Penske vehicle and I suggest going to any of them.
