Second Helpings is a nonprofit organization in Greater Indianapolis that has been making a significant impact since 1998 by accepting donated perishable and overstocked food. They prepare nutritious meals for thousands of hungry children and adults daily, distributing these meals free of charge through local social service agencies. The facility is managed by a combination of paid staff and dedicated volunteers, creating a welcoming and respectful environment for all involved. The organization focuses on food rescue, gathering ingredients that might otherwise go to waste, and training unemployed and underemployed individuals in the culinary industry. Volunteers experience a rewarding atmosphere where they help chop, cook, and assemble meals, rather than packing dry goods. This hands-on approach allows volunteers to meet people from diverse backgrounds who share a passion for helping others. Second Helpings also provides workforce development by training justice-involved individuals, helping them earn certifications and skills for careers in cooking and food service. The organization’s efforts not only combat food insecurity but also reduce waste in the community. Whether through volunteering or donating food, Second Helpings is a shining example of compassion and community support in action.
