Worst storage facility EVER! And I've used several storage facilities over the years.
I've looking at the reviews and #StoreLocal's response and, quite honestly, I find it exceptionally disingenuous! My claim's adjuster has reached out MULTIPLE times to get the cause of the mold/moisture, they are NOT responding. This is holding up my claim that I had to file with MY renter's insurance because the insurance I was paying for with StoreLocal, I was told WOULD NOT cover damages! Exceptionally sketchy business practices by this company!
DO NOT RENT OR DO ANY BUSINESS WITH THIS BUSINESS!!!!
And this reply is lame! #Storelocal is trying to CYA. My insurance adjuster has reached out multiple times so I may go forward with my claim on my renter's insurance, and STILL NO reply! #Storelocal IS NOT working to help their customers! I believe they want us to PAY yet again, ServPro, to get answers!?!?! THIS PLACE is a rip off!!
They are working to protect themselves! Someone should investigate this company!

I was able to reserve a space online and get everything confirmed in about an hour. It was a simple process and the employee who helped me, Bishop, was great!

If I could give zero stars, I would. This facility is an absolute nightmare. The first floor was visibly flooded, the entire building reeked of mold and mildew, and both the elevators and stairs were completely inaccessible. That meant I had no way to reach my unit on the second floor—despite just signing a lease earlier this week.
When I asked for help, staff made me wait over 30 minutes while they scrambled to figure out how (or if) they could even provide access. In the end, they refused to issue a refund for a unit I could not use. The condition of the property is appalling, and the customer service is even worse.
Do not use this place. Between the unsafe environment, lack of access, and refusal to take responsibility, Store Local Storage in Ames is a textbook example of how not to run a business. Save yourself the frustration and look elsewhere.

Bishop at my local storelocal was incredibly helpful throughout the reservation process. He listened attentively and made me feel supported, even when I felt overwhelmed.

The worst storage unit I have ever used. Their negligence and poor maintenance has led to a mold infestation of the entire first floor. They gave less than a 2 weeks notice (1 of the weeks being a holiday week where people travel) to vacate the already paid for units with no talks of reimbursement or help. It is completely unreasonable to expect the entire first floor to move out with less than 2 weeks notice. Especially when some units have very large items that can't be easily hauled away. Not to mention the damaged items people had stored. Then in the replies all they are doing is deflecting the blame of the short notice onto the third-party specialist. We did reach out to find help from the storage place privately and nobody called us back before the moveout day with next steps. Then a rep from the storage space has the audacity to get angry with us because we weren't able to haul 300+ lb piece of furniture in their short window. With all these angry customers suing would be a nice option. If you have stuff on the 2nd floor I would recommend moving out to a different store when you get the chance.

This is by far the worst storage facility I’ve used. The management is unresponsive and unhelpful, the property is poorly maintained, and no staff are ever on-site. There’s mold throughout the units as well. I strongly recommend AVODING this place. Stay away!!!!!

They have a mold issue, gave the entire 1st floor less than 2 weeks to vacate with nowhere to go. Asked for a little more time and got a big no way. Had to throw away a good $5000 worth of items because of this issue, and their insurance covers nothing! They won't help with anything either. Just an email saying you must vacate. Then a follow up e-mail of if you need storage again in the future consider us. Are you kidding me?! If I could give zero stars I would.
In response to their reply on here…no one has worked with us at all. I called and talked to someone who was very rude and that was it. I sent an email to them and they responded about 10 minutes after I sent the message we were moved out. Oh and the insurance? That is the insurance provided by them that you have to pay extra for each month.

MOLD, DECEIT & NEGLECT. Your reply is disingenuous. You claim you can’t discuss individual units because of ServPro, yet when I asked privately whether my unit was contaminated you refused to answer and told me to pay ServPro for an inspection. My contract is with Storelocal, not ServPro; you have a duty to inform tenants—especially those with disabilities and severe mold allergies.
You insist you notified tenants “as soon as we received formal confirmation,” but mold complaints on reviews and social media go back years. Staff entered units under the guise of HVAC or maintenance checks, hiding the problem until just 14 days before eviction—exactly what your contract requires. You even let tenants into hazardous areas without PPE while ServPro workers wore hazmat suits. Meanwhile, your official replies to negative reviews are scripted apologies; when I contacted you directly, you ignored my calls and emails.
You claim you’re working with tenants. I called repeatedly; you refused to tell me if my unit was affected, promised a callback that never came, and directed me to ServPro and my renter’s insurance. That’s been your response to every issue: hide behind ServPro, which then charges hundreds or thousands of dollars to move people’s belongings. And you offer different “options” to different tenants—some are told ServPro can move their items (for a fee), others are left on their own. This is discriminatory and unfair.
As a wheelchair‑bound customer with a serious mold sensitivity, I requested a reasonable ADA accommodation. Your staff told me ServPro sets the lockout date and I should ask ServPro or my insurer for an extension. That is a clear violation of federal law. Forcing me to pay ServPro or lose my belongings is not an accommodation.
You acknowledge there are leaks and mold but still refuse to refund prepaid rent. Calling this a “move‑out” does not change the fact that you are terminating the lease because your facility is unsafe—classic constructive eviction. Your insurance—not mine—should cover the damage and at least pay for tenants’ moving costs; that would be cheaper than facing a class‑action lawsuit. My original review (now truncated) detailed months of unauthorized entries, attempts to force broad entry rights, misrepresented insurance, and your refusal to refund. Stop deflecting responsibility. Use your insurance and make this right.

Store local had the opportunity to help their customers. They chose not to.

Suppose to be climate controlled yet EVERYONE who has a unit on the first floor has to find somewhere else to put all their stuff and barely gave 2 weeks notice. Stuff in our storage shed was SO MOLDY we had to throw stuff away!! HOW do they get away with this and have NO compensation for people. Don’t bring your stuff here unless you want it ruined

MOLD NIGHTMARE!! Unbelievable MOLD situation- given 2 weeks to move out! Given that these two weeks are the busiest for the students at ISU and being a parent out of town, this is nearly impossible! Two weeks leading up to Thanksgiving - I would have to cancel our holiday travel to achieve this! They give no help, no recommendation, no alternatives. You can’t move to a second floor unit (bc your in a pinch) unless you have your items inspected by THEIR mold company and prove it’s mold free and if it’s not, THEIR MOLD people have to treat it - whatever that means!! AND - mold spores are airborne so the fact they are not evicting the second floor as well is ridiculous! They have not told us which units they found mold or WHAT KIND OF MOLD they found!! And what about the risk of LEGIONAIRE’S DISEASE WHILE MOVING OUT?!?! This is the worst run situation by a company I’ve ever encountered. Typical slumlord behavior, taking advantage of college students and their parents!!! ZERO STARS should be an option!!!

Gave 2 weeks to move items out of storage unit (One of the weeks being the week of thanksgiving) because of mold. No, you do not know if you have mold. Provided email and phone number to call, however they have yet to respond to either. Never stated any compensation for the issues, if we could move units, or how long we should expect it to take if we are to get the unit back.

One star is too many for this operation! What this company is doing should be against the law! We are given 2 weeks over the Thanksgiving week to remove all contents or our contents will be disposed of at our expense for mold removal to take place on the whole lower floor of their building. Work has taken us out of state and are being forced to pay $1,000s for a moving company to move our stored items to another storage. We are 2,000 miles away and are now faced with this ridiculous situation.

Incredibly complicated process to cancel unit. Have to give a notice and you will be charged even if you don’t keep your stuff through the month if you don't cancel within enough time. No where on the website does it explain this process thoroughly or let you cancel online you have to go in person and submit a form that was hard to find they only have posters up and the online form doesn't even work to submit pictures of the unit. Have to wait for approval to cancel a unit I haven't used in months because i haven't been able to get back to it in person and I'm stuck with charges for it this month because I wasn't able to cancel it before the monthly payment. Just would not recommend.
