“My kids love going to weights and agility with Ben. He's really helped them improve their speed and strength. He takes the time to know what their upcoming sporting events are and adjusts accordingly. Highly recommend.”

“I worked out at Surefire Fitness for the past three years until I moved away from Ames, and I'd absolutely recommend it for anyone looking to get fitter - whether you're a novice or someone coming in with a lot of comfort in the gym already.

The structure of the workouts differs by day, with more of a cardio/group/fun focus on m/w/f, and strength days on t/t. On top of that, the trainers are a pretty knowledgeable bunch, so whenever I had an injury that kept me from doing the main exercise they provided lots of alternatives as well as advice on strengthening and regaining mobility.

Overall, I'd say that this is by far the best choice in Ames if you're looking for fitness *and* a community - the groups are small and the trainers are very nice, so it ends up feeling like you're part of a big family.”

“I’ve been working with Nathan for 6 months now via 1 on 1 personal training, and I could not give higher praises. While you are working with him you have his undivided attention. Even when you aren’t working with directly for training that day, he is busy working on your personal fitness plan, and is as flexible as you need him to be in order to achieve your fitness goals. He wants to see you succeed, and does so with his attention to detail and an infectious positive attitude.”

“Aaron may be the BEST coach I have ever come across! He's so attentive to every detail to ensure you lift safely, and he's always very encouraging! (On top of that, he's a super nice guy with lots of interesting stories to tell!) I pretty much only did the noon class or open gym, but the other coaches were very nice and friendly, too! I recommend this gym!”

“Been going to ARF for 5 years now. Great place to get a workout. West location is my least favorite but it's great being able to go 24hours. If you have the chance do check out the new south location.”

“Very kind staff, comfortable environment, good equipment! They play music but not too loud to where you couldn’t play your own with headphones. I would recommend.”

“The best kickboxing class ever! Everyone there is extremely nice and supportive. We work (really) hard but we have fun doing it! Kickboxing has improved my strength, cardio, and flexibility. It has also had a tremendous positive impact on my mental health. I would recommend the class to anyone, come have fun with us :D”

“I’ve had an excellent experience with my Nate, my personal trainer, throughout my weight loss journey. He helped me not only lose weight but also build sustainable habits to maintain it long-term. His approach is grounded in science-based guidance, which made the process feel realistic and effective.

He is always punctual, professional, and fully engaged during every session. He’s also a strong listener and creates a supportive, motivating environment. I appreciate that he’s always available for questions and consistently provides thoughtful, research-backed insights.

His strong interpersonal skills and genuine care have made a real difference in helping me get my life back on track and maintain a healthier lifestyle.”

“State Gym has much more equipment variety than Lied on the opposite end of campus. It’s just a much nicer facility overall. The caveat, however, is that this place can get very crowded during peak hours. I really think they should expand this gym to accommodate more students. It can be a little irritating to have to wait around for close to 30 mins to use machines.

Other than that, it’s a really chill place to work out. There’s even a little smoothie shop on the main floor I just recently discovered that makes really good protein shakes.”

“My name is Dylan. I’ve been going to this Planet Fitness for a while and I, absolutely, love the staff. Always greeted with a smile and they keep the gym very clean.”

“Not as upper crust as Ames Racquet and Fitness, but it does the job. Plenty of cardio machines and weights as well as a sweet open space upstairs. You're best served bringing your own water, but there is bottled water for 50 cents in case you forget. The water fountain is universally shunned due to taste. I figure whatever is going on with the water taste may be cost prohibitive to fix or is a city utility problem. TLDR Good. Not top shelf. But still good.”
