Horrible place! Do not recommend. My husband reserved a car for work. When he landed in Iowa and he was stranded because they gave his car away. They told him “sorry about your luck.” This is very unsafe especially to individuals who travel to new places and don’t have other ways to get around an area unknown to them. Shame on them!

They only received a 1 star because it’s the lowest I could go. Poor customer service. Poor resolution. At least the one at DSM airport. My first and last time making reservations with this company. This is getting ridiculous! I reserved a rental for Friday. I did not pick up the rental because the woman at the counter requested an additional deposit, after they had already charged my credit card for the rental. Needless to say, I did t get the rental. It has been a pain trying to get a refund for this. You can’t get a person on the phone to talk to. Payless you need to do right by me and refund me for a rental I didn’t use.

Do not rent from Payless. I had a reservation and was picking up my car at Des Moines airport. When I got there they were putting everyone on a waiting list on a piece of paper to get their car. I was number 30 so there was exactly 30 people waiting. They kept saying that the cars weren’t ready and they were cleaning it. It took me an hour and half to get my car even though I had a reservation. While I was waiting I saw a couple of clients come back and say they wanted another car because the air wasn’t working or something was broken in the car. Then one of the customers that had just left called on the phone because their car had broken down. The lady at the counter wasn’t very empathetic and just said call AAA for assistance. You can tell they don’t take care of their cars.

Horrible horrible horrible they had a reservation 12pm and after waiting 30 minutes in line and another 45 for them to "GET THE CAR FROM INVENTORY" my travel was delayed 1:30 because they only have one line .. horrible experience just go with enterprise

Zero transparency with regards to policies and extra charges.Prepaid for my rental then charges an extra $30 at pickup cause I was early. I asked why and was told “airport taxes.” I then called and the early pickup and extra hour of rental was explained to me. Had this been told to me at the initial pickup instead of a lie I would have waited 22 minutes to pick up the rental. I had spare time.Upon return I was charged 9.99 for gas. I have two small kids so I filled the car up ahead of time and drove maybe 5-10 miles to the airport. Was told I needed to fill it up within a 2 mile radius. Thankfully this charge was waived but it required a wait in line to talk with an agent. I have pictures to show the tank was filled PAST the full mark (see attached).My $72 rental nearly cost me $110. Had I not been lied to at pickup it could have actually been $72. It’s not Payless, it’s PayMore.

I am obviously upset. your rental practices should be illegal! Never renting from you again!I rented a car at the des moines arpoirt at an already excessive rate of $154 per day! I returned my car past 1 hour and got charged $51 extra per hour x 2 hours, bringing my bill to $332 dollars for a rental of 26 hours!!!When I dropped my car initially, I did not know how much i would get charged but when I saw the bill in my email inbox, I went back to the counter to get my keys back, if I was going to pay a full 24hour rate then I might as well keep the car for another day, is that not the right thing to do? They would not make that change! Thiefs! How can you sleep at night with these operating practices! Need this to be made right! Only charge one day! I would have been ok with the full charges, if they would have returned the car back to me for another full day!

I called 2days straight (on one day I called 7x) before I made a reservation. Then I called the day I was coming back to return the vehicle (to report I would be 1.5hr late) but no answer and I called 3x. So I called one of your sister companies (budget) to get a hold of you all. Once I told you all I would be late they told me I got 30min grace period then after an hour they automatically would charge me for a whole day. Which I feel like is outrageous especially if I was returning the vehicle before you all closed.Also I could be wrong but I was supposed to get a vehicle that was a Corolla or similar and I received an accent which seemed smaller. No one did a walk around of the car.The drivers windshield wiper (left one) didn’t do nothing but smear the whole trip.

Rented a black Camry, 9735549-5, a non smoke vehicle at Des Moines Airport. B.S. they lied! Called phone number listed to register complaint... CALLED 11 TIMES!! No one answered any of the calls, NOT once did they pick up a call! Horrible place to rent a car... H O R R I B L E!!!

I rented from Payless in Des Moine Iowa for a long weeked.. Small Compact car.. I picked the car up on thursday about 11AM and Returned it on Sunday about 1:30PM.. I was chaged $83 a day and charged an extra day for turning the car back 2 hours late. My 3 day charge was over $500

Posted 6/27/22. I was expecting lots of roadblocks or problems based on previous reviews; however, my experience was very positive. They had my reservation recorded, gave me a very clean new Prius for a rental. Returning was very easy. No problems at all.

I waited for over 2 hours for a car that I had reserved to be picked up at the Des Moines International Airport. And on receiving it, discovered that the low tire pressure light was on. So I waited 2 hours for an unsafe car. The staff at the front desk told the 20 plus people waiting for their reserved vehicles that it would be a 30 minute wait that last more than 2 hours. This really is unacceptable. Not only for the wait, but especially on receiving an unsafe vehicle. This deserves 0 stars, unfortunately it won't allow to post with 0.

Worst car rental experience of my life. PAYLESS CHARGED ME FOR 3 ADDITIONAL DAYS---DESPITE THE FACT THAT I HAD RETURNED THE CAR THREE DAYS EARLIER. THEY NEVER CONTACTED ME ABOUT THIS MATTER-- THEY JUST BILLED MY CREDIT CARD FOR $750--MY BILL WAS SUPPOSED TO BE $186.98. I TRIED TO FIGHT IT WITH MY CREDIT CARD- CHASE. CHASE SIDED WITH PAYLESS. TAKE NOTE NEXT TIME YOU ARE DECIDING ON WHAT CREDIT CARD COMPANY TO DO BUSINESS WITH. I HAVE CONTACTED THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE. THREE WEEKS LATER--AG'S OFFICE SAID NO REPLY FROM PAYLESS. IT LOOKS LIKE I MAY BE FILING A SMALL CLAIMS ACTION AGAINST PAYLESS.

A more proper description would be "no service" rather than poor service - I booked and paid for a rental car through Orbitz, and when I got to the airport I was told there were no vehicles. I should just wait for a phone call from them the next day, and they would tell me when a car became available. I finally got them to give me their number, and when I called it nearly 30 times the next 2 days not ONCE did someone pick up. It has now been 6 days, and I am back from my trip, and I have not been contacted even ONCE, nor have I gotten through to them on the phone! The level of service, is, in actuality, non-existent.I am finally in contact with their complaints department after I emailed them. I surely hope that they find a way to compensate me for my lack of any vehicle, lack of any service, and complete sense of helplessness.Summary: Payless = Get less.
