Such a cute antique store, and if you find the stuffed raccoon that is hiding somewhere in the store, you get 10% off.

This shop was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our three-day trip to Des Moines. As it turns out - confirmed by the very helpful, friendly lady at this antique store - most shops in town are closed on Sundays and Mondays. She, too, found this both odd and disappointing. That said, I’m glad we stumbled upon the Raccoon Forks Trading Company on our mostly fruitless search for anything interesting to do downtown on a Sunday.I’m probably biased for my love of antique stores, but even still, it is objectively fun to visit. So much stuff to look at! I could easily kill a couple of hours browsing. Prices seemed fair - from larger furniture pieces to small trinkets and antique books. I wound up purchasing an early 1900s jewelry box for $25, which I’m very happy with.

We are in Des Moines for a family trip and love antiques. This place was a really cool surprise. We ate at the adjoining cafe “Railroad Bills” boxcar diner and loved it. Great breakfast and burgers and the potatoes were excellent. Vegan and gf options too!

I really enjoyed browsing this antique shop after eating next door. It is well organized and the staff is super helpful. My husband collects uranium glass so a lady showed me all the pieces they have and shined a black light on them to show they are real. I also inquired about penguins and they directed me to a display case where I found a salt and pepper set. Some of the items are quite expensive but that is typical of Antique stores where the workers know the value of the items. Either way it is a fun place to browse. Just make sure that you have enough time on the parking meter. Des Moines doesn't mess around with that. Thankfully there is an app and you can add more time if you start to run out.

Glad we found this gem! An historic Des Moines building with a fascinating story filled with a very nice selection of antique treasures. I found a rare piece of Des Moines history to take home and enjoy. Staff are very knowledgeable and clearly enjoy helping. Almost didn't want to leave a review so I could save this place for myself!

The Raccoon Forks Trading Company is kind of hidden away from the main East Village establishments. I only found it because I had parked at the nearby (and free) Capital lot and wandered by it on my way down to Fontenelle Supply Company and Raygun. There's also a restaurant next door (and connected inside) called Railroad Bill's Diner, which will have to wait for my next visit. I enjoy antique stores, especially the ones that have some curation and don't make me feel like I'm drinking out of a fire hose when looking around. This store is nicely laid out, easy to navigate, and features various individually owned (?) and themed bays (like books or tools). I also appreciated that I was pretty much on my own, unless I needed to ask for help or advice. So what did I buy? Let's just say that Gayle has already asked about it, rolled her eyes, and restated that we didn't need any more "junk" in the house. These places never reveal their true breadth in one visit, so I will be back the next time I'm in town. When you decide to come, please also note the historical building and its freight company heritage.
