I’ve rented monthly cars from Avis for months as a Preferred member with no issues. Always treated fairly and upgraded — until now.
This week, the manager and staff berated me, saying my corporate code was “pricing the cars too inexpensively.” How is that my problem as a paying customer? On top of that, the service was rude, dismissive, and felt borderline discriminatory.
I was told multiple times to “come back later.” When I returned at 2 p.m., the woman at the counter had one of the worst attitudes I’ve ever seen in customer service. I finally told them to cancel my reservation and went straight to CarMax to buy a car instead.
Avis has lost a loyal customer. The only good employees I’ve dealt with there were two young men on visas who actually understood customer service. The current team? Unprofessional and unfit to represent the Avis brand.
I’ll be sending this to the Avis C-Suite, the president of Avis, posting across all my media channels (20k+ local followers), and making sure this story is heard widely.

Just wanted to give a shout out to David at the counter today. I came in and there was trouble with my reservation and completely my fault. David helped me with the issue and was able to rent me a car. Thank you, David. I very much appreciate you.

Boomer female service agent was sexually harassing her three younger, male coworkers the whole time — calling them all “babe” and touching them. Really gross, unprofessional, and uncomfortable.

This location is why I left Avis after 10 plus years renting with them. Because of a one way rental they wouldn’t let me choose a car but their worst dented high mileage Malibu on the lot without a full tank of gas. (Stating they don’t give good cars on one way rentals to Boston as they will “steal” them) On top of this they proceeded to charge mileage on this rental. I have never once rented a car without unlimited mileage. And it wasn’t even disclosed to me… Let alone some beater that they provided me with. Unacceptable. Will not rent Avis anymore. So much for preferred customer. And don’t be fooled “budget” is the same company.

For the past 3 summer trips for us, this location has experienced great difficulty in providing the vehicle that we reserved, and has consistently overcharged us. To their credit, they always reversed the overcharges, but it required more time and hassle at the rental counter (both at pickup and drop off than what i’ve experienced at any other avis location…I rent 3-5 times per month for work). For renting at PWM Avis in July….plan on a long line at the pickup counter (yes even for preferred customers), expect to receive a downgraded vehicle than what you reserved (with no price concession), and document the odometer reading with a photo before you leave the parking garage (this trip makes twice that they claimed we drove the vehicle for thousands of miles and tried to charge us extra for it). Not sure if the other rental services at PWM are any different though…

The reserve online process was easy. Everything else not good. Reserved a car from PWM Airport location, because it's the only one available in my area. Reserved with a VISA debit card. Went through fine, I decided to check if this was ok after seeing some places don't allow VISA debit cards. Could only get robots on call in number so went to Airport to check on reservation. There were no signs as to where this place was in the airport. But parked and eventually found it. It's in the basement of parking garage. There is a big sign saying no debit cards only Major credit cards to rent. Asked an agent anyway since I used my VISA debit to rent from Enterprise in the past. They confirmed no debit. So I immediately canceled my reservation. One day after making it and 4 days prior to the pick up day and STILL got charged 50.00 to cancel. I ended up taking a Lyft to my destination. *Edit* I gave one more star since they ended up refunding the cancellation fee after my 1 star review.

An absolutely awful rental and return experience. Completely unprofessional worker walked away in the middle of returning the car and did not come back. Avoid this company

As an Avis Preferred member, I’ve consistently had smooth and professional rental experiences until this one at the Portland, Maine location.
When I arrived, I was greeted warmly by the staff at the kiosk. I had prepaid for my rental online and expected the usual quick and straightforward process. The agent joked about giving me a minivan or an electric car, then told me he would find us something better. When he returned, he handed me the keys and said I’d be happy with the car. The vehicle was clean, ran great, and was larger than what I reserved which I was okay with until I realized what had actually happened.
Instead of honoring the prepaid reservation as-is, the agent processed it as a voucher toward a higher-priced rental without clearly explaining that I’d be charged additional fees and taxes. In the end, I paid more out of pocket than expected, despite already prepaying in full (including taxes) through the Avis site.
He also nearly added my husband as an additional driver without discussing the additional cost associated with this, which I happened to catch and correct.
While the staff was friendly and the vehicle was great, the lack of transparency and misleading upgrade left me feeling like I had been taken advantage of which is a terrible feeling. I’m currently waiting for Avis to resolve this and issue a refund.
Please double-check your rental agreement before leaving the lot. This experience was a good reminder that friendliness shouldn’t replace clear and honest communication.

The most dishonest company. If you have disabilities from a car accident don't apply to Avis they won't hire you. They had multiple lawsuits from ADA. I highly recommend applying for Enterprise or Hertz
