“James Allen was fantastic to deal with, I ordered from Canada and my order shipped a day early and arrived within a couple of days, they have such a great selection of setting sand diamonds and the package it came in was fantastic, I was really pleased with the ring and my fiancé loved it, plus they always seem to have deals going on! Sizing was accurate and I’ve been referring all my friends to them”

“My wife and I inherited a lovely 250 year old English grandfather clock - it had not been serviced in years and wasn't working properly. In addition, the case (especially the bonnet) was in poor condition. Both the finish and the structure needed a lot of attention. The fixtures supporting the finials were broken and a number of trim pieces had broken off.

The clock maker recommended that we take the case to Arte Lepre in Kensington. I contacted the owner, Fabio, who was simply fabulous. He repaired the supports and trim, and painstakingly stripped and refinished the case, using shellac for the final coating. The result was a case with a beautiful warm glow, highlighting the beauty of the original wood.

Fabio was a surprising and welcome find. He is a superb craftsman who is very engaging and communicated very well about all steps of the process.

If you have any valuable antique furniture which needs attention, you are in very good hands at Arte Lepre.”

“This is one of the few flea markets left in DC that sells antiques, vintage and one of a kind items. I love artisan wares and they can be found more at Eastern Market but this market feels more like going to garage sales. Make sure you go down the alley and around the back of the school for more vendors”

“Outstanding workmanship. Honest, forthright, superb craftsmanship. I've been working with Brian and Gallo for 20 years, on numerous vehicles - usually at least one or two of my old cars are in the shop at any given time. Without fail, each time, the cars come out as stunning works of art. Now, fair warning - this is NOT a place to go for cheap or economy (or for that matter, fast overnight) work. Brian is expensive - you must know that going in. But he also is very accurate in his estimates and his timekeeping and recordkeeping and billing. Usually, when I go there, I wish there was a vaccine for sticker shock - but I've developed a fair immunity over the years. Because - the results are worth it. All of my cars usually go into the shop as hopeless rust buckets - or otherwise as failed PO (prior owner) restorations (e.g., full of mud, bad paint jobs, shoddy mechanics, bad electrical, hidden rust). Gallo and Brian find all of that stuff and put the car back together the RIGHT way. In short, if you're looking for inexpensive, quick, fast-and-dirty, TV-reality car-flip el cheapo work, then go somewhere else. If you have the funds, the time, the patience, and the appreciation, then you come here for your restoration work. Put it this way - take a look at the shop. It's not fancy - they aren't taking your money and buying a bunch of fancy facilities and furnishings - it's a three-bay garage with a paint booth and a tented storage lot (graveyard?) out back, minimum frills, lots of work going on. And you can see the work being done - it's right there in front of you. You can see the time and quality going into each project. And Brian keeps extremely accurate records of each nut, bolt, part, etc. that goes into the restoration. The other plus - Brian outsources his upholstery work to the best in the business, Jamie over at Car Care Customs in Silver Spring. Jamie is the nicest guy in the world, and does absolutely astounding work (again, take a look at the no-frills shop on Garfield - fabric piled to the ceiling, sewing machines humming - all business). Fair warning - better get Jamie fast, since I think he will be retiring soon. But, back to Brian's place - I think I'm probably on my 5th or 6th project (more to come). I'm a huge fan of this shop and of the fine individuals who own and operate it. Has my bank account suffered? Absolutely - painfully. But has my garage benefited from their work? Without question. It never fails - once a car is done (and this may take years), wherever I go, that car turns heads and stops traffic. So, to the haters (the one-stars), sorry you feel that way - there are plenty of fast-fix, cover-the-rust-with-mud places, here today, gone tomorrow. The car restoration business is not for the faint of heart or the light-of-budget. You'd probably be better off going somewhere else. As for me, I'll stick with Murphy Brothers.”

“If you’re looking for trinket dishes, small vases, unique artwork, and more, this is the shop for you! The shop is set up so that various small businesses have a shelf or a corner for their stuff, so there is good variety. The store is a great size for perusing and not feeling overwhelmed. Everything is very reasonably priced too. I got a vintage mug, original drawing + frame, and a set of holiday stamps for $70. I sometimes find that staff at antique stores can be rude or hover over you, but the ladies here were very kind. I will definitely be back :)”

“I just discovered this place and typing my review as I’m leaving the bookstore and I must say that it’s amazing! Everything is messily organized (which I loved btw) and it’s so quaint and cute. I just bought eight books for $26 dollars which is a great steal! Definitely plan on bringing my mom back with me and I’ll definitely be coming back to buy more. ☺️”

“Very large and many vendors and some with specific periods or areas of expertise.
My only annoyance was it's a bit of a maze but a very minor gripe.
Prices were normal and inline with what you expect. Would definitely return.”

“Go-to retail shop for all things creative and DIY. Especially if you are one to look for inspiration in-person rather than on Pinterest, you should wander here to find your next project. Kensington has a street dedicated to antique retailers, consignors and upcyclists which goes by "Kensington Antique Row." More information can be viewed at: kensingtonantiquerow.com.”

“We've been to this merchant a few times. I have a differentability (thank you to my little great niece for changing my perspective ?) and I some times require an aide for walking. My husband and I found some beautiful hand carved canes here and at very reasonable prices. We receive constant compliments going through the airport home and even more when I use them as a walking aide.Purchased hand made leather shoes from here and my son was elated with his gift ?.The staff is always very friendly and you can meet some very interesting people here as well. The store has two levels so don't miss going upstairs. There is definitely a lot to see ? so plan on spending some time to find your treasure. With all that said a little more organization would be nice so you can better see the selection and they have cats all over the place which I was not a fan of. However, my family and I visit here pretty much every time we're in the area and we look forward to viewing their new offerings.Check them out! Hopefully you'll find something interesting of your own in your visit.”

“I love Cheeky's! Heather has done a really great job at finding unique, useful mid-century housewares and furniture at reasonable prices. Her stock is always changing. Today I bought a set of campaign coupe glasses, a splayed fruit bowl, and lovely pearl inlayed ceramic coasters. In the same area is Suffragette City Vintage wears and jewelry. I bought graduated rose quartz drop earning and also many vintage pieces in the past. You also cannot miss My Dead Aunts' Books! I can spend hours in this place! Thankfully Vigilante and Franklin's are nearby!”

“We have been customers of Luban Auction Gallery for many years. Amy Guo, the owner is a true connoisseur of Asian antiques and holds a large warehouse of very hard to find high quality items. This is a unique true treasure of a store. Transports you instantly to Shanghai. This large store has all manner of Asian, primarily Chinese works of art, folk art, and furniture. The owner Amy, is a delight. Luban Auction Gallery, owned and managed by Amy Guo, may have the largest and most varied storehouse of Asian, primarily Chinese antiques in the Washington area. That at least has been our experience. We found Luban and Amy by chance in 2018. We had been looking for a significant Buddha image for an honored place under a Bodhi tree in our garden. We searched dozens of places, from upscale garden shops to the Smithsonian, with no success (at any price point) until we happened on Luban in an on-line search. When we reached Rockville and entered the warehouse we were transported to Asia - we found a wonderland of antique furniture, porcelain, bronzes, jade, textiles and more. We also found many Buddhist inspired stone pieces appropriate for gardens. Not only were the works exquisite; Amy offered us extremely attractive pricing and was able to have this very heavy piece delivered to our house! A year later, we returned to pick up two additional pieces for the garden - a carved stone "100 Buddha" pillar, and a pagoda temple. Nowhere else have we found such pieces. In home furnishings Luban has an extraordinary selection of furniture and magnificent porcelain pieces, including lamps. Luban also has some stunning European and American sets of china and porcelain. Amy Guo is very generous in sharing her expertise and time. I could go on. But anyone in the Washington area who is interested in Asian antiques, art, folk art and decorative art needs to visit Luban.”

“I’ve been friends with Doug for about 12 years and Modern Mobler in DC and Kensington are the best stores to shop at for Mid Century Modern Furniture, art, glassware and decor. It’s just like stepping into a Mad Men set.”

“This is a nice store focused more on Americana, country vintage, and primitive antiques. It is not a big shop but it has a good selection. There are a significant number of pieces of furniture and larger decorative items, such as wall art. Overall this store is a good resource if you are trying to decorate your space in country/Americana style with genuine vintage items.”

“I have only had positive experiences here. The volunteers who've helped me have been lovely, interesting women. The inventory is pretty incredible, mostly jewelry and home wears. Many things will be listed well under market. To me, it's been a treasure and hope others have good experiences, too.”

“Fantastic selection and wonderful prices! I was impressed by how much was packed into this shop, I’m fairly picky and walked away with a lot more than I usually do from the thrift. The clothing section is the real gem. I’ll certainly return!”

“I love GoodWood for its selection. I love their incense and candle selection. The staff have never acknowledged me in the 3 times I have been inside and few times I have purchased. The owner seems to be very nice, though.”

“This is one of my favorite stores. I've bought many things from them over the years. This Xmas my husband bought me some pillows, but they weren't my taste and when I went to return them with the receipt, they could not have been more gracious in letting me exchange them. So, great customer service and wondrous decor. You won't regret shopping here.”
