About Copps Hill Burying Ground
Copp’s Hill Burying Ground is one of the oldest cemeteries in Boston, established in 1660. It is the city’s largest colonial burying ground and the final resting place for over 10,000 individuals. Many famous Bostonians are buried here, including merchants, artisans, the sexton who placed the lanterns in Old North Church, and many of Boston’s early African Americans. The oldest headstone belongs to two children from the Copp family. While many headstone inscriptions are worn away with age, others are in very good condition considering their age. A grave finder is available to help locate specific graves. Located on a hill in Boston’s North End, it is a quiet and respectful place with amazing views of the water and the USS Constitution. The hill was an important vantage point used by British soldiers during the Battle of Bunker Hill. It is a stop on the Freedom Trail and can also be visited on guided tours. There are steps up into the burial ground and no restrooms. The walkways are smooth enough to safely walk in low light, though it can be quite spooky at night.

I really great experience and was the end of where we stopped on the freedom trail saving the other side of the river for another trip. Highly recommended that you walk the whole trail and this is yet another beautiful stop on the trip.

It is the second-oldest burying ground in Boston and the final resting place for over 10,000 individuals, including merchants, artisans, and a large number of early African Americans. Established in 1659.
