Initially only brought my mothers vehicle due to proximity to my home, have since stayed for the honest and good work.

Respectful discussion of what's needed with a dose of good humor. I bring my car there for all work on non warrantied systems. (E.g. consumables/maintenance like brakes and plugs.)
Tell a man he has a 'beautiful truck' (even a 4cyl Mazda) and you've made a friend.
