I started coming to this shop when he had first opened. IMO, best fly shop in Baldwin. No other place (and I have been to the others) has more in regards to selection of flies. I wait until I get up North to buy my flies from 1884 because they are top quality. I have walked into other shops in the area and not even been greeted. Dan goes out of his way to develop relationships with his people. My cousin and I were up recently, and my cousin was pretty lost with his fly line set-up. Dan put a new (used) line on for him for free and didn't charge him. It was one he had laying around. This is the above-and-beyond type of treatment you can expect out of him (I'm not suggesting he just gives away equipment, nor should you expect it...lol). I find the conversation when I am there engaging and useful. A lot of guides don't fish outside of just guiding, but Dan is in the river frequently, and it shows based on the information he provides. I relate well to and appreciate people who show a passion for what they do for a living, and he couldn't be more passionate! He's not the type of person trying to sell you stuff you don't need. I have always walked out of his shop thinking to myself I know more than when I walked in. I am looking forward to hiring him as a guide in 2026.

Last summer, I went on a last-minute guided trip with the owner of the fly shop. We did an afternoon-into-evening mousing session, and it turned out to be one of the coolest guided trips I’ve ever experienced. The fish were biting, and although my skills weren’t quite there yet...I missed a few...I felt that Dan did everything he could to put me in the right spots and give me the best possible chance at success. I’ll be better prepared next time. Highly recommend!

Excellent fly shop. Real deal. They are fully stocked with anything you could need. Very knowledgeable guy working the counter. Quickly helped me break down the differences fishing trout in northern mi versus the western fishing I’m used too. Highly recommend

This is a must stop when we’re in Baldwin. Very cool shop with a lot of great gear, cigar humidor, and just all round cool place to check out. Super clean and organized and just all round a nice setup

Helpful staff, very good selection of flies, fly tying materials, and high end fly fishing apparel. The store also contains a very small selection of cigars. This shop carries a good selection of tying materials that are not found in other shops. I suggest stopping in to look at their selection of flies and materials.
