About Keweenaw National Historical Park
Keweenaw National Historical Park is a captivating destination that offers a rich tapestry of historical experiences for visitors. Located in Calumet, the park is a bit of a drive from Traverse City, but the journey is well worth it.
The park features a variety of visitor centers and cooperating sites that provide a comprehensive overview of the area's history, particularly the copper mining industry. The buildings themselves are architectural marvels, showcasing a grand and imposing style with beautiful design. Visitors can explore the free museum at the visitor center, learning about the region's past through engaging interpretative content and fascinating artifacts.
One of the park's hidden gems is the former library and swimming pool, which is typically not open to the public. However, a kind park ranger provided a special tour, allowing visitors to step back in time and marvel at the magnificent space, a true time capsule that showcases the incredible craftsmanship of the past.
Whether you're a history buff, nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a unique and off-the-beaten-path experience, Keweenaw National Historical Park offers something for everyone. The park is dog-friendly, and the entire family can enjoy the variety of activities and experiences on offer.

This is the most extensive visitor center I have ever been to. Much more like a museum. We spent a couple of hours and didn't get through it all. Very interesting history of the Keewanaw and the copper mining history.

It was a bit confusing where to go, but the park staff were helpful. We initially went to park headquarters, so we were directed to the visitor center where they have a free museum about the history of the area and the copper mining industry. Beautiful building and park staff are super helpful.

Helping to preserve and interpret our history, the NPS and cooperating sites lay out such a variety and depth of experiences that a curious visitor could be busy for weeks or more. Start at the NPS visitor centers (Calumet and Quincy) to get an overview and enjoy from there.
