Dollar Stores near Mesick, MI

“If you’re expecting the typical small-town Family Dollar experience, this location in Mesick might actually surprise you. It’s right next to a competitor, which makes the location slightly amusing, but after walking through both, Family Dollar definitely seems to have the advantage when it comes to selection.

This store feels a little like a miniature Walmart. There’s a surprisingly wide variety of groceries, household supplies, cleaning products, health and beauty items, snacks, drinks, seasonal merchandise, and all the random odds and ends you suddenly remember you need when the nearest Walmart isn’t exactly around the corner.

The store also looks newer and is much nicer than some of the older Family Dollar locations I’ve visited in southern Michigan. It was clean, fairly organized, and appeared to be well stocked. I’m guessing being in a smaller town with the closest major shopping options being farther away in Cadillac or Traverse City probably makes having a good local selection pretty important.

What really surprised me was how busy it was. We stopped in around 9:45 on a Sunday morning, and there were already quite a few shoppers in the store. Apparently Mesick does not believe Sunday mornings are strictly reserved for coffee and contemplating your life choices.

Overall, this is a genuinely useful little store with a much bigger selection than I expected. If you’re staying nearby, camping in the area, passing through town, or simply don’t feel like making the drive to a larger city because you forgot three things, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll find what you need here.”

“I’ll admit that I usually have a slight preference for Dollar General over Family Dollar, largely because I’m a sucker for the $1 Deals aisle. There’s just something entertaining about wandering through it and discovering things you absolutely did not come in for but suddenly feel compelled to own because, well…it’s a dollar.

This Dollar General in Mesick is located right next to Family Dollar, so apparently this little stretch of town is where the dollar-store rivalry gets serious. While the Family Dollar next door has a surprisingly large overall selection, this is still a solid Dollar General with pretty much everything you’d expect: canned goods, snacks, drinks, household supplies, personal-care products, seasonal merchandise, beer, and even a produce section.

But the unexpected star of this particular visit was the Ashley Belle hand sanitizer selection. I have NEVER seen this many varieties in one Dollar General. There were different scents lined up like someone decided Mesick, Michigan needed to become the hand-sanitizer capital of the Midwest. 😂 If you happen to collect them, like trying different scents, or simply want your hands to smell considerably more interesting after pumping gas, this may be your place.

The store had a decent selection overall and is a convenient stop if you’re staying in the area, camping nearby, or passing through and need groceries or basic supplies without driving all the way to a larger town.

Overall, it’s a perfectly respectable small-town Dollar General—with produce, beer, the beloved $1 Deals aisle, and apparently enough Ashley Belle hand sanitizer to survive several additional global events.”
