We recently stayed at The Shack, the only cabin open during the winter at Loon Lake Lodge, and had a wonderful time, despite recent rain foiling our plans to go cross-country skiing. The cabin is in a beautiful setting just above Loon Lake, with trail access right outside the door. Thanks to Andrea's recommendation to bring spikes, we were able to go on some excellent (at times icy) hikes and enjoy the quiet beauty of the BWCA. The night skies are amazing just outside the cabin door. The cabin is very clean and comfortable and has all the amenities you need for a wonderful retreat!

Loon Lake Lodge is a great place for a winter getaway. The lodge only keeps one cabin open for the winter and all the surrounding private cabins are three-season. It's almost like you're staying on your own private lake. The Shack is well appointed and comfortably sleeps four. Enjoy access to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing right out the front door of the cabin. Winter is my favorite time of the year in the BWCA and Loon Lake Lodge is a big reason why.

Derek and Andrea are exceptional hosts! Derek makes a fabulous take and bake pizza which was perfect for our first evening after a long drive. The Hydro bikes are a must to use being they are included in the cabin and so much fun! Our cabin was very comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay!Nearby activities: We biked the Gitchi-Gami trail in Grand Marais, where the water fall was taken. Biking the Gun Flint Trail is not recommended being no shoulder as our hosts indicated prior.

We found Loon Lake Lodge a few years ago when looking for a new vacation spot in northern Minnesota. We went there this year for my retirement celebration trip. It was the perfect choice! Derek and Andrea are absolutely great hosts. They made sure everything was perfect for our stay. I had a problem with my truck and Derek was right there to help fix it. The grounds are very well maintained, and our cabin was spotless. You can't ask for a better view and you can regularly listen to the loons the lake is named for. If you are fortunate enough to vacation at Loon Lake Lodge make sure you check out their pizzas and their homemade ice cream sandwiches. After a day of fishing, hiking or kayaking it's a great way to end the perfect day.

The experiences at loon lake lodges are so wonderful. The cabin is clean and cozy. The hosts are extremely nice and helpful. The view is fantastic. We sat the deck and observed loons, which is so chill and peaceful. Also tried kayaking and hydro biking and had so much fun. We will definitely return someday in the autumn and appreciate the most colorful season.

We have come to love Loon Lake Lodge for its serene, peaceful location and the ability to easily access the wilderness without sacrificing the comforts a cabin with comfy beds and well-equipped kitchens and bathrooms. The original log cabins are well-maintained, and Andrea and Derek are wonderful hosts.

Loon Lake Lodge never disappoints! We just got back from our third trip up to the resort and can’t say enough good things about this place. We stayed in cabin 2 which is only accessed by stairs but set perfectly into a hill that you have a nice view from the lake and a private deck. These are 1900s original log cabins with kitchens, bathrooms and wifi. We love how easy it is to disconnect here. The lodge is a wonderful amenity with drinks, merch, and take and bake pizzas. You can also rent out a pontoon or fishing boat for such a reasonable price. Derek and Andrea are super knowledgeable about the area and gave us great hike recommendations. The location is also conveniently located near the Gunflint Lodge and Poplar Haus if you want to eat out. Loon Lake Lodge is our happy place and we can’t wait to come back! (Bonus points because they are dog friendly)

We loved every minute of our stay at the Loon Lake Lodge. We stayed in "The Shack" cabin the last week of June and were very happy. It was the perfect amount of space for 2 adults and 2 teens. It's a lovely rustic cabin... with Wifi, which was so nice to have. It was also very clean -- we literally didn't see any spiders or other creepy crawlers. We rented the pontoon boat and the kids had a fantastic time swimming off it in the middle of the lake. We also took out the hydro-bikes several times too. We loved fishing off our private dock, as well. Andrea and Derek, the owners, were very helpful and friendly. We're already talking about when we'll be going back again!

What a wonderful trip up to Loon Lake Lodge. We had a peaceful, relaxing trip with our two little boys. The owners are helpful and enjoyable. Wish we could have stayed longer. We already booked for next year.

I stayed solo in Cabin 2 in September 2021 and again in September 2022. I couldn't have dreamt up a more perfect cabin or resort! Wonderful old cabins, beautiful surroundings, and the friendliest and most accommodating proprietors you could ask for! I'm going back again this year and bringing two friends to share the experience.

We have stayed at Loon Lake Lodge two years in a row now and plan to continue! The historic cabins are the epitome of "hygge" and the hospitality never disappoints. With fewer than ten cabins, the family takes the time to care for and know each guest - and yet we also had the quiet, secluded, privacy that we wanted on this remote woodsy trip. We love the free kayaks for guests and ALWAYS see at least one loon on Loon Lake. :)
