Great place for a comedy show.

This is a great venue but I hate the fact that they let their loyal patrons get ripped off by Ticketmaster. Literally, they contract with Ticketmaster and the price of a ticket goes up by 33% on everything.

They charge you $4.50 for the worst cup of Folgers coffee you've ever tasted. Mixed drinks are $14 for 1 ounce of spirit + terrible dusty soda water and ice that tastes moldy. I know the brand of the coffee and the amount of alcohol because I asked the manager.

i could add a photo of how beautiful this place is, because it is, but if you’ve read other reviews you know that.
what i want you to takeaway from this is this is the worst seating you will ever experience. i saw someone compare it to a plane- it’s worse. the seats are completely metal, but not metal folding chairs you can buy for $10, those would be better. no, the have barriers between each of you, so if you’re over 150 lbs, good luck fitting. i almost had to leave what should’ve been an enjoyable show because of the discomfort.
almost every show has a no photo policy as well.
and their employees are entirely unhelpful and rude when asking for assistance. i was told to turn my phone off when using it to show an employee my seat number, which she asked for, because phones weren’t allowed to be on for a show that started in 40 more minutes.

Absolute trash heap, deadbeat staff.

Great acoustics overall. The seats could use some additional leg room.

Good venue but they make you use Ticketmaster. To get your tickets you have to go through your email, enter your order info on Stubhub, get the app or navigate through other options, then get redirected to Ticketmaster where you have to create an account and get endlessly spammed. At this point, I'd rather do something else. Is it really not possible to show up and get in? Movie theaters are able to do this with assigned seating. Or hey, just text or send the barcode to my email when I'm out front.

What a beautiful theater! But if your tall like me the seats are cramped... but still go and experience this one of a kind place if you can! Great staff!

Great show but seating is tough when a very tall person sits in front of you. There no way to see without sitting in the person next to you lap. Glad the comedian walked back and forth along the stage.

A very nice place to see a show, concert or movie. I was fortunate enough to be here for the Prince Celebration 40th anniversary of Purple Rain event.
Very nice inside and great views all around including from the balcony. Not supposed to take photos inside but we got away with it the first day but they cracked down on the second day.
Got to see Prince concert footage and then the movie Purple Rain with a crowd of Prince fans who knew every line and song, what an amazing experience. Then had a panel discussion with The Revolution about the movie.
Second day more Prince concert footage, sneak peek at the upcoming Purple Rain Musical (which will preview at The State Theater in April 2025 before opening on Broadway in June 2025), and then concerts from Taj Farrant, The NPG, and Morris Day.

I saw Mark Normand at the State Theater back in April. The performer was great, but the theater experience was not. I am extremely disappointed in the State Theater.
I’ve never been to a show at a theater venue that had that much movement of people walking around and arguing about seats that far into the show. I really think the State Theater dropped the ball on this one, they did not know how to handle the situation.
It’s not the theater’s fault that there were so many people that showed up after the main act had started. This is after the opener had already performed and the main act hadn’t just started, I’m talking about him a good 10-15 minutes into into his set, many people were still just coming in. When that happens at other venues, to disrupt the main act as little as possible, people are usually escorted to their seats by theater employees, and have to wait their turn to be escorted if they arrive after the main act has started. But not at this State Theater show.
The # of people coming in and searching for their seats and arguing with people where their seats were, was higher than average. A theater employee should’ve recognized it right away and gone over there to sort it out ASAP to minimize disruption to the show. The entire first half of the main act, there were a distracting amount of people standing up and moving in and out of seats. In fact, it was so distracting, that it even affected the performer on the stage. I felt Mr. Normand found all the movement throughout his show distracting and even a little rude, you could kind of see it on his face. You could tell as he was often looking at all these people walking around, talking, and getting in and out of their seats during his entire set. It was almost like we were at a comedy club watching standup versus a theater. We really could’ve used some help from theater employees.
For some people, the row in front of them had someone standing and blocking their view of stage a good portion of the time. I was actually annoyed after the show was over, which is not the usual feeling I have after watching standup. And you know it’s not good when the performer seems obviously annoyed too. I was at the 7pm show. I know there was another at 9:30pm and I hope that one went better. Because if I was a performer in that situation, I don’t think I’d want to perform at that venue again, as it would’ve given me the impression that the State Theater did not know how to facilitate a show properly. I have been to many, MANY shows in the theater district and this is the first time ever I’ve given a review of a venue.
P.S. I know the theater can’t do anything about patrons getting up to go get drinks. And I like a cocktail myself too. For this particular show, the people coming in so late were definitely the more distracting part, however, there were also a lot of individuals that were getting up during the entire show to go drinks. More than you usually see, not just the amount of people, but the frequency. Like many others, the row in front of me…I’m not talking about one, or even two, but throughout the entire show - it’s almost like these people got their tickets for free or something and didn’t care to watch the show at all. Every time they’d go get a drink, people would have to stand up to let them out, and stand up again to let them back in, so you’re seeing multiple rows doing this throughout the theater throughout the entire show. It really affected the audience experience and the main act was even starting to notice. I’ve NEVER said this before, and can’t believe I’m saying it now lol, but maybe at the State Theater, since there are very few employees helping, maybe they should consider closing the bar halfway through the main act to minimize all the movement in the audience.
