Where do I start?! You absolutely do not get what you paid for I do not agree with the comments that say that. But to start I’ve stayed at this property before when it was Candlewood suites and it was a GREAT STAY. Very good condition, very clean etc now ALOT has changed. This place would be better off as a “Red Roof Inn” or Quality Inn franchise. I have been to other Sonesta properties and this one by far is very subpar.
When I first arrived to check in it was chaos, someone pulled the fire alarm on 2 floors so the guy at the front desk was running around frantic. He was the only one on staff for a Friday night check in smh. After waiting a good 30 minutes, the fire dept showed up, cleared the alarm and left. So I continued to check in, I was given a room on the 3rd floor. As I made my way up there we tried to use the elevator but apparently the fire alarm disabled the elevator the rest of the weekend. I take the stairs, on my up I see on every flight of stairs exit door is huge piles of garbage.
I get the room and try the key it and it doesn’t work, I tried a few times before going back downstairs. I repeat this process literally 3 times before he goes up there himself and tries. Of course it didn’t work for him either. So then he loves me to the 1sr floor. I go check out the room and notice it’s in bad shape, but whatever I then see the top comforter is dirty. So I make my way AGAIN to the front desk.
He takes me to laundry room and gets me a new set of sheets and a comforter, but the comforter is still damp lmao. At this point I’m like whatever, there is a Walmart down the road I’ll just go by sheets. So for the first time ever staying jn a hotel I go but my own comforter set. When I got back to the room I saw he left one on the bed, but I didn’t use it anyway since I already got my own. I also got supplies to clean the shower head because it was in rough shape with rust and corrosion.
With my walk around the hotel you can really see how rough of shape it is in now. The new management really doesn’t care about the property, it is now a dump. The parking lot included, piles of garbage waiting to be taking out, cars sitting on the rotors, not shoveled etc.
Avoid this Sonesta location at all cost if you can, unless you can get it for like $50 and need a place to stay. The guy at the front desk tried so I gave the service I higher star rating. But it’s in really bad condition. I didn’t take pics of everything but the few I did will paint the picture just fine.
Only plus is hotel is located in a great location, easy access to the highway. Plenty of shopping around the area: Walmart, Target, Sam’s Club, Dollar Tree and of course the Mall Of America. Plenty of restaurant options and things to do. It is also not far from the airport.
Rooms: All rooms include microwave, full fridge and mini stove.
Nearby activities: Next to Mall Of America.

I am a big fan of the super luxurious leather recliner they provide in the rooms. I think the way they have the furniture plan layouts in all of the rooms is one of my personal favorites out of all hotels with the same amount of stars.
Rooms: A large fridge and freezer
Nearby activities: Electric stove top range burners
Safety: 6 people can comfortable hang out and spend time in a typical room here.

It’s one of those places that you get what you pay for. Lol. I’m cheap so it worked for one night, the card reader didn’t work so we had to switch rooms. Do not buy a handicapped room the regular ones are ok.

I love this place! I absolutely love it! It is one of the best hotels I've ever been to and I just love the staff. They are so wonderful. They have done such a good job at really maintaining this place. The rooms are excellent. Thank you to the wonderful cleaning staff and excellent service. I have stayed many nights at this hotel and will continue to as long as this management remains. Thank you Sonesta for the rooms that feel a lot more like home in this in between. I couldn't be more grateful for the way the rooms are. They're just wonderful. The staff is too. Thank you to this hotel for giving us a home away from home. Or I should say home in between homes.

Terrible Experience - Do Not Stay Here! Rooms offered are not accurate or even available.
We booked this hotel due to price and location for an event. The double bed room we booked online was not even available in this location anymore. In addition, it was dirty and smelled like weed.
Rooms: Rooms were not clean and we're in poor condition.

We used to recommend this spot to friends and family when it was Candlewood, but it has changed hands a few times since then, and declined considerably. A frequent stayer mentioned that the current owner bought it from Sonesta very recently, so I will offer the caveat that this review is as of December 2024, and things may change.
Currently the hotel is not in great shape: Empty vending machines in the lobby, some minor damage or need for repair in common areas. The laundry is coin operated ($2.50 per wash or dry, so not terrible) but some machines were out of order or would not return coins if you entered a coin but did not start.) The laundry room was not very clean when I was there, but the machines that were not out of order seemed to work okay.
The guest room itself was a good size and layout for the type of room and the bulk of the room seemed to be reasonably clean. The bed seemed reasonably comfortable. However the room could use some attention: the door handle at the entry was loose and functioning awkwardly, and a couple of fixtures in the room were also loose.
The kitchenette was lacking. First, there were coffee packets on the counter, but NO coffee MAKER or even a tea kettle! Also, when you seek a room with a stove, microwave, refrigerator and dishwasher with cabinets, you probably do so expecting to be able to do some simple food prep. However, there was no pan or pot suitable for cooking. (We went and got one of our own.) There was no rag or sponge to use to wash a dish, and the kitchen was the one area that was not very clean--dirty dishes in the dishwasher (either dish washer hadn't been run or it hadn't been able to clean the dishes) and the dishes in the cabinet had some kind of sticky residue on them and had to be washed first. Note: Including the dirty dishes in the dishwasher, there were two dinner plates, two small appetizer plates, one bowl, two forks, two butter knives, a couple of mugs and a couple of cooking utensils. If you're planning to stay for a longer stay, you may need to consider supplies.
The person at the front desk was very polite and nice. However, for the time being, I won't be recommending the place. I do hope, though, that in time my opinion could be changed.

The door on my end of the building could not unlock due to obvious damage, causing me to walk the entire building outside in the rain. The room was very clean, although the hall and outside were not. Bed was not comfortable for me, although someone else might have liked it. I probably won't return simply because I live in Iowa and very seldom need a room in Minnesota.

The room we stayed in had rips and knicks in the furniture, as well as stained carpeting. In the parking lot there were drunk construction workers staying there who approached my car upon arrival. At the entrance of the hotel, more people who were also not sober were sitting on the sidewalk. We reserved for 2 nights but checked out the next morning as it was super seedy. I was told my credit card would be credited for the night we didn't stay. That didn't happen. Called them 45 days later. Credit was still not applied. Had to contest it with my credit card. Will NEVER stay at a Sonesta again.

This hotel brand should be embarrassed to have their name on this property. It is on par with being a homeless shelter more than a hotel. The outside had its share of garbage. The inside was even worse. The front desk clerk could barely get the room keys to work to start with. In the room it was in need of some tough love but the linens were gross, no towels in the room and the front desk said that they might not even have any to give me (she did find a clean one.....one towel). The hallways stink and there were 5 garbage bags just laying outside room doors but weirdly not one in the waste basket in the room. The Security guard knocked on my room door at 1:30 am with another guy who said that it was "his room". What a garbage operation. Spend an extra $10 per night and stay somewhere else. God, I hope I didn't get bed bugs at the place. Worst stay ever. Sonesta will never get my business ever again.
Rooms: Gross, no towels, no garbage bags, very dated and terrible linens and pillows.
Safety: On site security guard who doesn't know how to do his job. Someone told him it was their room so at 1:30 am he bangs on my room door asking. Buddy should have went to the front desk and asked that guy what name was attached to the room and booted him off site. Key card system is garbage and doesn't work well.
