Extremely well done preservation of this archeological dig. The 2 docents we interacted with were very knowledgeable and informative.

An amazing all-day trek into the past when Northern Nebraska was a warm, tropic like place with many different birds and animals that are now extinct but frozen in the deadly mire of ash spawned from volcanos a state away. The main attraction is where animals became trapped when they sought refuge from the suffocating ash in the ponds waters but became stuck, frozen in time. The archeologists here have patiently dug around as many of these, showing their bodies just as they died in the ash. And they continue to do that today, finding more types of animals each year.

Love going here every couple of years to see the progress. You can tell everyone loves what they are doing because they are engaging and the last time we were there we got to touch some of the ash that was being removed.

This was one for the bucket list! On our customary summer travels this year we picked out Ashfall fossil beds for one of our side quests... and we were not disappointed.
We could have spent the entire day there exploring and investigating the beds. So fascinating and well put together.
This is a must go place for any curious mind. The people working were all helpful and kind. The interns were awesome. We learned about their work and future projects.

It was fun to talk to the staff in the rhino barn. They can answer all of the questions you have about the fossils they have found and any of the animals in the posters lining the wall.

I was visiting with my wife in August 2021, at the family invitation of my sister-in-law Yoli Anderson. Very illustrative, real images with explanations to understand how the fossils got there and what happened. A pleasant experience. Thank you Yoli, Aylí, Nick, Larry

While up in Nebraska on business I noticed this place on the map and made the ride out to see it. And I was glad I did. Everyone is enamored by dinosaurs and such, perhaps due to popular movies and literature. But so many other creatures roamed the world between the time of the dinosaurs and our civilization. Here at this location one finds a time capsule captured in ash that showed the local ecosystem on that fateful day. All of these animals died at once and their remains preserved in the hot ash that blew in from what is now Montana.Lots of interesting signboards discussing what one is viewing as well as the actual fossils themselves under a large barn-like structure.I want to go back and bring some of the grand kids. It is a long ride and if you don't like fossils and natural history is not your thing than perhaps it is not worth the ride. But if you want to see what wildlife roamed Nebraska millions of years ago this is the place for you!

We visited the site yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. It helps to do a little research before you go, but it's not necessary since the visitor center has much information on the site. The rhino barn is amazing and the on site paleontology intern was extremely knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. Her passion for what she does there is evident. She was the icing on the cake!

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! Really impressive displays along with great information to view. Nicely laid out and I enjoyed the signs everywhere providing details of all kinds. But the highlight of the visit was the time I spent speaking with Raesha!! We were there on Friday 9/8/23 in the morning before they got too busy.Raesha was working in the ashpit gently removing ash. My husband and I walked over and Raesha was kind enough to take the time to talk with us about a variety of things. I am in no way joking to say that speaking with someone like her has been a life long dream of mine!! Raesha held up a freshly uncovered rib of a foal and even handed me a bit of the ash. Being a paleo-nerd I was overwhelmed by being given such an opportunity!! Raesha also provided me with some book titles and even had the Office Manager chase us down out in the parking lot with some info for me.Raesha, you were wonderful to speak with and I wish you the best in everything.Visit this place, it is so worth the drive!!

If you’re in the area, it’s a treat to visit the Ashfall Fossil Beds. The staff are so wonderful, knowledgeable, and fun to chat with! After a walk around outside, they a cool covered interior excavation site where a guide offers so much interesting information about the work there and the vast natural history of this place and country. I’ll be bringing my family back on my next visit. The gift shop is full of cool things to get for adults and kids and the restrooms are clean.

This place is so cool! Entry fee was $8 for adults. They have so many preserved skeletons of various animals. There was a young man (glasses, tall) who worked there that was so informed. He knew so much but didn’t overstay his welcome. I wanted to thank him for sharing with us, but didn’t get the chance before he went on to another group of visitors. I wish I knew his name so I could thank him publicly. There was a little museum and gift shop. Bathrooms were clean and easy to find. The whole place is easily accessible by wheelchair is needed.I brought my dog along and the only place she wasn’t allowed to go into was the museum, bathrooms, and gift shop.If it wasn’t so warm, we would have walked the trails. The landscape around there is stunning!
