I moved to Saint John nine years ago to read my Master’s at UNB, and I remember stopping by the store one Saturday to buy a bed. I wish I could remember the manager’s name, but I’ll never forget what he did. He went above and beyond, and I don’t use that phrase lightly.
He helped me pick out a mattress and box spring, and since it was the weekend, delivery would normally have been the next business day. Instead, he casually offered to deliver it himself in his truck. I honestly thought he was joking.
He wasn’t. About 30 minutes later, he was at my apartment with my mattress and box spring.
That simple, genuine act meant more to me than he probably realized, especially as someone new to the city. It’s one of those moments that stuck with me, and I still tell this story anytime I talk about my Saint John experience.
