“Z. Berman Books – Squankum
A heimishe seforim-gas station for the neshama (and the wallet, chas v’shalom) 😄
If you’re in Lakewood and you tell me you’ve never walked into Z. Berman Books on Squankum, I’m not saying you’re doing life wrong… I’m just saying you’re missing out on a very specific kind of simcha.
This place is mamash the classic corner seforim shop, but like… on steroids. You walk in “just to grab one Tehillim” and somehow you’re leaving with:
a new Gemara that you “needed for clarity”
a random Artscroll you didn’t know existed
a gift for a chasuna you forgot is tonight
and three kids books because your little guy saw the shiny cover and now it’s pikuach nefesh
The selection is wild. English books, Hebrew seforim, Judaica, kids stuff, and all those “small items” that become big items once they’re by the counter. The shelves are packed in the best way — like, you feel the Torah in the air… and also the pressure of, “Ok… be normal… don’t buy half the store.”
And the staff? Super helpful and normal about it. You can ask, “Do you have that sefer… you know… the blue one… about emunah… maybe by Rav something?” and they’re not fazed. They’ll either find it, recommend the right thing, or point you exactly where to look — like a human search engine with more seichel.
Also, the vibe is very Lakewood: you bump into someone you know, you shmooze for 7 minutes, and then you remember you came in for one thing and now you’re holding five. Classic.
Bottom line: Whether you’re grabbing a quick siddur, building your seforim shelf, shopping for a simcha, or just need a wholesome “browse therapy” moment — Z. Berman is a total go-to. A real heimishe treasure.”
“What a fine store and what a great town we live in where we have such Heilegeh Seforim stores so accessible.
One thing that truly disappointed me when I walked in was the “Super Agent Gizmo” books on display right when you walk in, how have we stooped so low that we prioritize these nonsensical whimsical books over the Heilegeh Tayereh Seforim!!
We must make a Machah!!”
“I have not been to the store . Placed an online order for delivery. It was personalized so I expected a wait time. Within 1 days (little more than 24 hours of order ) it was at the door . It was a gift so it was earlier than had expected. Amazing service. Will not hesitate to order again”
“We were a party of four women at the Gould mansion to meet Anne Oakley. It was a wonderful experience. The re-enactment was exciting and moving. I learned so much about this famous woman. And found myself singing silently in my head along with the singers. I can't wait to go again to another touching performance.”
“Z. Berman Books consistently delivers an outstanding experience. Their Judaica and seforim selection is extensive and well-curated, and the staff is always knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely helpful. Whether I’m looking for something specific or browsing for ideas, they provide excellent guidance and make the process smooth and enjoyable. A truly reliable and pleasant place to shop.”
“Very large judaica store from kids toys and books to woman's cook books to seforim for men, all at the lowest prices in town and not compromising on cleanliness or quality or service. Highly recommend going out of your way to buy from them.”
