“TL;DR: The buying experience was top notch but the car fell short of expectations with some undisclosed issues.
I recently purchased a 2015 BMW 328i M-Sport Wagon, which is a somewhat rare car in general. Vantage had one that satisfied most of the criteria that I was looking for so I decided to move forward on the purchase. I dealt with Shawn H. throughout the entire transaction. Bottom line, he is a great salesman and was an absolute pleasure to work with. Being halfway across the country, I was not able to see the car in person, but Shawn made sure to answer all of my questions and fulfill any requests I made. He also made the process of shipping the vehicle to me super easy. The documentation and financial aspects were handled seamlessly as well. The actual shipping and receiving of the vehicle was a bit clunky, but the blame for that can be placed on the shipping company.
Now where things fell a bit short are with the car itself. After living with it for a few weeks, I have noticed a few things that, in my opinion, should have been disclosed to me prior to the sale.
1. Most of the passenger side of the vehicle has had some really low quality paint work done. Now this is almost impossible to capture in a picture, but is super obvious in person. I'm talking several runs in the clear coat (rear quarter panel and passenger front door) and large areas of heavy orange peel (both passenger doors) and also clearcoat peeling under the passenger side mirror. This something that even Maaco wouldn't let out of their shop. Now this car did have a reported accident in Carfax, but for the opposite side of the vehicle. Likely not fixable unless the side is completely repainted $$$.
2. Half of the speakers in the car are non-functional (all front door speakers, 1 subwoofer and both rear parcel area speakers). Now this one isn't totally obvious at first, since there is a front, center speaker to fill the front sound stage. However, either the dealership knew or previous owner knew of the issue beforehand. The amp was replaced at some point and the original amp was left in the trunk of the vehicle... The original amp was found to be completely dead. With this car having the Harmon Kardon system, a good used amp or amp repair runs $500-800 and a new amp $1400+, so not exactly cheap. This is disappointing when one of the highlighted features of the car was the high optioned HK system. (update: I just had this repaired at a cost of nearly $600)
3. Large dent on rear window trim and roof. Now these are minor compared to the others, but it wasn't noticed in the pictures or pointed out during the video walkaround. The trim is bad enough where a new trim piece is going to be needed. The roof is not an easy repair.
4. Random missing items, including the engine cover (why??), 1 rear floor mat, rear wiper cover, rear seat ISOFIX covers, lighter plugs, etc...
Now had I been able to see the car in person, would I have been able to catch these things? Maybe. Would a PPI have caught these things? Also maybe. But paying top dollar for a car like this, I would not expect it to have issues the issues mentioned above. General wear and tear for a car this age and mileage, absolutely, but these things fall well outside of that IMO.
On the positive side, Vantage did put some work into the car before selling it to me. There was a misfire that started after they took possession which was immediately fixed. They also replaced the rear brakes before the sale was completed. So, mechanically the car is great, it runs and drives as expected.
As always, buyer beware, especially if you are from out of state or buying sight unseen. I know this dealer does a lot of business on Bring-a-Trailer. I certainly expected a better quality car from a place with the reputation this one seems to carry.”
