“I pulled into Valero like it was a mirage after twelve bad decisions and one empty tank. The sign said Top Tier Gasoline, but the vibe said emotional damage. The wind carried the faint scent of diesel, optimism, and hot dogs that had seen things. I parked crooked, stared at Pump 4 for a full minute, and swore it whispered, “It’s been a long day, huh?” I agreed. Out loud.
Inside, the lighting was dramatic, like a telenovela set. There were snacks everywhere, each one somehow louder than the next. A wall of energy drinks stared back at me, promising flight or cardiac arrest. I chose a blue one called “Nitro Wolf.” The cashier, a man named Kenny with the wisdom of someone who’s restocked too many Slim Jims, looked me dead in the eye and said, “Good luck.” I’m still not sure if he meant with the drink or with life.
I left with a tank full of gas, a heart full of confusion, and a receipt long enough to qualify as literature. As I pulled away, a single plastic bag floated past my windshield like it was in a movie about redemption. Five stars. Would spiritually refuel again.”
