A true gem for any chess enthusiast. Not just as a shop but as a source of knowledge for improving your chess and learning about the history of chess. Fred’s a USCF Master, chess historian, and an incredibly passionate chess educator. Stop by for a great conversation or book recommendation, and walk away with some newfound knowledge that will no doubt elevate your appreciation of chess (and likely your ELO).

Walking around the city I typed “chess” on google maps and “Fred Wilson Chess Books” popped up. I didn’t know what to expect with only two photos of the building entrance on the business Google page.I had the great pleasure of stumbling upon this chess bookstore on the 7th floor of an office building in Union Square and chatting with the owner Fred Wilson for two hours about chess, New York City and pizza.Fred has been in business for 50 years, teaching chess, writing books, selling and collecting. Probably the only chess centric book shop in the US. He gave me a tour of his shop - hundreds of new and used books, on chess history, openings, endgames, tactics, rare books, international books as well as his personal collection. I bought two books he wrote and five vintage books from his $3 bin.I highly recommend visiting Fred Wilson Chess Books and experiencing a part of a disappearing New York.

(Translated by Google) A very unusual bookstore, on the seventh floor of a building, Fred and Dix(GM) have unique chess books. My husband was looking for an opening with a very specific variant and there he found what he wanted??. They are mostly used books, from their private library, they sell them at very reasonable prices. Finding the entrance to the building was not easy, it has 2 entrances, it is the one next to Mc Donald's.(Original)Una librería muy particular, en un séptimo piso de un edificio, Fred y Dix(GM) tienen libros únicos de ajedrez.

Fred Wilson is one of the great NYC Chess Personalities. He is kind, patient, and funny, and knowledgeable about not only the game, but Chess History. He has an amazing selection of books, great prices, and deals for regular customers. If you are buying Chess Literature, do yourself a favor, and purchase it here!
