I had an amazing experience at the Hair Rules salon. Dickey had a full house and it was impressive to see him juggle every client while making sure no one was neglected at all. The appointment was very informative and he took the time to talk through the entire process and explain how I could recreate the routine at home. I deeply appreciated him sharing his knowledge with me because I genuinely feel more comfortable caring for my curly hair in between appointments now. I will definitely return to the salon in the future!

This is for the NY salon. I'm the husband going to buy the product, not the actual user. If you're closed on a Saturday when you're supposed to be open (it was 11-30 to 12) at least put a sign up. Also the fact that you can't call a business is ridiculous, get a number for your NY office. If this wasn't a black owned business I would have given 1 star. Do better.

This was my second time visiting the salon, the first was last year around the same time as this. My apportionment time was at 3pm so I arrived early - maybe around 2:45/2:50 pm because I don't like being late for appointments. When I walked in the assistant had me sit on the couch - at this point, he is doing one woman's hair and there is another waiting (First red flag). Around 3pm (when my appointment was supposed to begin) the assistant told me to go and wash my hands and when I returned to the couch there was another woman who was also waiting - she immediately went and washed her hands and was seated in a chair (second red flag). The woman who arrived after me, but was seated before, was then taken to have her hair washed. I was not put into a booth chair until about 3:15pm and around 3:25pm I was then taken to have my hair washed by the assistant (third red flag). When I returned to my seat the assistant then was the one who blow-dried my hair (I know this can be normal at some salons but I have never had this happen at my normal salon - I am originally from DC but in NY for school - and the first time I came to Hair Rules last year). Additionally, when blow drying my hair the assistant commented on my heat damage - I always wear my hair straight because for ME it is the easiest to maintain due to my busy schedule and the frequency in which I workout - when I explained to her the reason why she understood and dropped the conversation. At 3:48pm I was FINALLY seated in Dickey's chair, by this point I am very annoyed because I have been waiting so long and I would assume for such a "professional hair stylist" he wouldn't triple book himself. When he starts flat ironing my hair he made two comments about my heat damage and when I explained to him the reason why he then made another comment - which was unnecessary and rude at that point. He then asked when is the last time I got my hair cut. I told him the last time I got a haircut was over the summer and a trim in December he made the most disgusted face in the mirror as if my ends are just horrible - and if that was the case then perhaps as a hair stylist he would tell me that he is going to trim it and just charge me ESPECIALLY since his whole brand is focused on his notion of healthy hair. When he was finally done with my hair it looked nice - but like I could have done it myself. When I booked my appointment the price stated online was $125 - and since it is cash only (for whatever reason since he accepts cards for his hair products) I had $145, because I initially planned on tipping before. When I went to pay with the assistant she told me it was $150 and when I told her it was only listed as $125 online she went online and saw that it is listed as $125 she could not explain where the additional cost was coming from. I had to use the ATM in the salon to take out $20, because I was overgoing back in forth with the woman - paid the $150 and left. I will never be returning again, which is unfortunate because I was truly happy with how my hair looked last year when I went but in hindsight, I was only happy because it had the highlights and the haircut that my real stylist gave me a few months before coming to Dickey.Service: Hairstyling

Dickie had always known how to get hair looking and feeling its best. Always provides the tips and guidance you need to keep it looking fresh. The salon is smaller, the vibe is larger. Always fresh, always professional.

I wanted so badly to love this place, but it was terrible. I don't know how they started the process without asking me if it was okay to use heat and blow out my hair to cut it while straight. That's a terrible way to cut curls!! All of my curls of different patterns are wonky now with some being super short and others super long, it's ridiculous. Also, I told Dickey that I wanted to maintain my length on my hair, and he cut off 4 inches from my hair! Honestly so ridiculous for how much the haircut costs. Never going back there.Services: Haircut

It’s strange reading these reviews—it really seems as though some people aren’t clear on where their hair is or what it needs, and are surprised when they’re told?I’ve come to Hair Rules a few times and it’s always a good experience.

My appointment was with Mr Dickey himself. I have been going to Black stylist all my life and this man puts them all to shame. I learned more about my hair and how to keep it healthy and stylish than I have in my entire life. I can't tell you how truly appreciative I am of someone with enough self love to help me express my appreciation for the beauty that I have always wanted to display but did not possess the wisdom to know how!Service: Curly hair

You know, as I read the previous commentary about the owner and stylist of this salon, it makes me feel as if I have been going to a wholeee different place from some of the people who gave negative feedback. I have found Dickey to be pleasant, funny, and educated in his profession. As they say, different strokes for different folks. Sometimes reviews can truly deter a person from going to a shop to do hair. I say, go in and experience the salon for yourself. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and we are now living in a post pandemic world, where everyone is just trying to get back the business they've lost. I highly recommend this salon it's clean, spacious, has good vibes music and you get out at a reasonable time no waiting! Most importantly, it is black-owned. So give it a try!Services: Hairstyling

Dickey is a textured hair specialist. He literally wrote the book on it (Hair Rules). The salon also has clients with hair of all types and emphasizes care and maintenance. It’s the only place I trust for highlights

BUT BABBYYYY I NEVER HAD A EXPERIENCE WITH A STYLIST LIKE THIS BEFORE, HE TOOK BACK THRU MY HAIR JOURNEY ALL THE WAY BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD! IF I CAN GIVE MORE THEN 5 STARS I WOULD GIVE A MILLION! IT WAS HOW A SALON EXPERIENCE SUPPOSE TO BE!! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!!Services: Curly hair
