JAPANESE MEDIA ONLY

My wife and I love this place. There's really nowhere else like it in NYC! If you are looking for Japanese media (movies, dramas, daytime TV, anime) this is the stop for it. It's incredibly difficult to watch most JDramas and many Japanese films here in the US. If they're not on a streaming service (most aren't), you're looking at paying huge prices to import DVDs from Japan, many of which can be close to $100 for just a few episodes of a show. Here you can find many of these same shows and dramas for a fraction of the price! It's a complete life saver. They even have some sections of the movies segmented and labeled by director; I was able to find several Shunji Iwai movies here that are almost impossible to come across online!I don't quite understand the people who found the staff unhelpful. The woman who was there both times me and my wife went was wonderful, she really would work hard to find what you were looking for, and if they didn't have it she would explain why. She was also very kind. The level of help quality might vary if you don't speak Japanese (my wife and I can) so that might explain it, but personally I found the staff really great. My only real complaint would be that the HD video and Blu-Ray selections are pretty slim. Most of their offerings are on standard DVD. My wife doesn't care about video quality at all, so this is fine for her! For me, I end up having to upscale most of the stuff I get. Having more options for Bluray or HD media would be great, even if it meant the prices had to be higher. But this is a great and unique store, hope to see it around NYC for many years to come!

Small store with a wide range of Japanese DVDs at fair prices. Customer service varies depending on who's working. No longer does rentals. Does not accept returns!

I love this place, HQ Video has the best selection of Japanese Movies and TV Series, all at affordable prices and most with English subtitles available for those who need them. They also have instant noodle packs cheaper than all of the supermarkets. Everything you need for Movie Night

This place is a gem. There are Japanese movies here that you can't find anywhere else, and always for fair prices. Most of the movies don't have English subtitles, but some do. I've never gotten a bad movie here--even ones I've never heard of that I get on a lark turn out to be good. If you want to expand your horizons beyond what few Japanese movies get US distribution, this is the place. Wonderful contemporary Japanese directors like Naoko Ogigami (who should be known in the US but isn't yet) are well represented.

This place is a rarity - a rental store that's also Japanese. You go through a mirrored corridor and up the stairs to walls with posters of new releases before entering. This place probably caters to the few Japanese living or working in New York since most of the titles don't have English subtitles which is really unfortunate for me. I think the rental prices are pretty decent. They also sell DVDs but their authenticity is questionable. It is also pretty difficult communicating with their one or two staff members in English. But I just think it is pretty cool that this place exists. On another note, I walked into a curtained off area and it was pretty embarrassing seeing super explicit scenes on the overhead TVs. It was still a well lit area so it didn't feel shady but it would have been interestingly awkward if another customer was there at the time.

Used to go here about 10? or so years ago as a child. Great place to get my Japanese DVDs like Doraemon, Hello Kitty, and more. Love this place, and thinking about going back here next week!

If you need your fix of Japanese TV or video this is the place to go to in NYC. They offer items for rent and purchase, though the rentals won't work for you if you are not in the area regularly. Also, you do need to be able to read Japanese, don't bring any bags for the aisles are NARROW, and the customer service is not the best.
