lovely library but there is a particularly rude security guard. fell asleep while studying for finals. couldn’t have been more than five minutes I was asleep bc the same song was still playing, but anyways he knocked loudly on the table jolting me awake and then very loudly, as if he wanted to publicly embarrass me, said i have to wake up. mind you it is super echoey in here due to the beautiful architecture. nevertheless I checked with the front desk and there are no rules against sleeping in the library as long as you are not being disruptive. this is also not the first instance of him just being rude but the one that affected me the most.

I was curious by looking at the building outside, what kind of place is it? The building was originally built as the Third Judicial District Courthouse from 1874 to 1877 and was designed by architect Frederick Clarke Withers of the firm of Vaux and Withers. The library has 3 levels: basement, ground floor and second floor. I love the style of architecture so much, looks mysterious and classic. The library represents history of Historic Greenwich Village Landmark very well with books, map and pictures.

Dropped by on our way to Stonewall Inn, and were very pleasantly surprised by how beautiful and impressive this library is. Would love to sit down and just read, if we had the time.

I like how cozy this library is. The spiral stairs is awesome and it feels like you’re in a castle going up tot he tower.

A secret surprise! WOW! We just popped in here to get a break from the rain and ended up staying a while. Perfect spot to chill and take in the amazing architecture of this hidden historic gem! The entrance level floor is the children’s reading room and is full of laughter and chatter of delighted children. The “basement” level is a cozy quiet space with lots of tables that are equipped with outlets to charge your poor dying cellphone. The ceiling of this reading room is the real charmer. It’s boasts a series of arched brick treatments and feels a little like a wine cellar although still very spacious and inviting. Newspapers and a comfy seating area are provided for guests who want to take a break from the busy streets of the city. Be sure to explore the amazing spiral stone staircase to the 3rd floor reading room. Even if you don’t have to check out a book, step in quietly to admire the beautiful 2 story gothic windows. So much history and amazing architecture! You won’t be disappointed.

?- It’s beautiful.- The location is good especially for people taking PATH. It’s just right beside the 9th st station.- The children area is on different floor so it’s less crazy here.- The hours are longer compared to most of the libraries, and it opens on Sunday.?- There’s only 1 restroom at the basement.- There’re not many seats with plugs.- It’s relatively crowded.- There’s stale air at the basement. Probably there’re people who smells around us.

An amazing, peaceful library. I would visit here pretty often to do work when I'm taking a break from my appointments or need to wait in between appointments. There's always seating available on upstairs. It's spacious and clean and there are outlets available for use. The decor and architecture of the building is beautiful as well. There's always individuals coming to take photos of the interior design and architecture of the library. The restroom is downstairs in the basement. They also have a children's space on the first floor and a computer space in the basement. Tl;dr - quiet and perfect place to get work done, computers downstairs, study tables upstairs, children space first floor

I love a building with a quirky history, and the Jefferson Market Library certainly has a colorful past. It was originally a courthouse, with a civil court on the second floor (now the Adult section), a police court on the first floor (now the Childrens section), and a jailhouse/holding cell in the basement (now the Reference Room). Post renovations, there is an elevator available for those who are unable to climb the steps of the spiral staircase of the firewatcher's tower and new communal tables with outlets in the Adult Reading Room. The wallpaper up top features signatures of actual patrons of the library, including that of Scarlett Johansson (or so I'm told). My only complaint is that there is one bathroom for the entire building and it's located all the way in the basement. You will need to ask a librarian for a key to enter, though in my experience there's usually already a line so people just pass the key to the next person.

Security man is extremely, unnecessarily rude. In the past, they had a woman with similar temperament. The new restroom, unfortunately is a magnet for the drug users in Washington Square Park. Nicer Village library experiences to the east.
