I ended up here because the New York Times did a feature on this shop's Christmas ornaments. The article was interesting and the store was fun, but I'm not sure this place has ornaments you can't find anywhere else, and you might be able to find some cooler vintage ones with better prices. Many were 40 dollars or more each. It was fun to take a quick look, but the store is narrow and can only accommodate a few people at a time. Though we arrived a few minutes before opening, there was already a line. You really couldn't take time to look or appreciate because people couldn't move around you and you felt like you were holding up a line. The staff was nice and I wouldn't mind going back to see if my first impression was off. They also seem to have a couple other design stores on the same row, catering to different aspects of home decor. All that being said, the NYT article did mention that the shop has bins and bins of labeled ornaments in the back so they can quickly replace any that are bought or broken. So maybe if the shop gets too crowded and you get bumped into, accidentally breaking an ornament, you won't be put on the naughty list.

My husband and I stopped in John Derian while in New York for the Thanksgiving holiday. The shop is always a joy to visit but is extra special at the holidays. The variety and quantity of Christmas ornaments available is outstanding. I work in retail so have the benefit of seeing thousands of ornaments and even so their selection is impressive. I especially loved the display of vintage tree toppers. The service was excellent and they made sure to pack up our selections very carefully and even offered to ship them home for us. This is a must hit shop when in NYC.

I was so pleasantly surprised to stumble upon this store a few days ago. The store already had their Christmas ornaments out and, my goodness, they are beautiful! I love how unique some of their holiday decor is. I was able to find a really special ornament that I plan to gift later this year. I will definitely return and check out the other two store areas in the future.

The customer service isn’t the best. Expect judgmental looks if you are not dressed the part. The snobby older man that I know is not the owner wouldn’t even say hello when I said hello to him. The other employees are young male model college age eye candy for the older staff to ki Ki with, I’ve seen this before in other stores. The older man at the Christopher st store wouldn’t even help me until he noticed I was carrying a Prada bag, the bag is a hundred years old by the way and nothing special ??My friend pointed it out that the man would only help me when he saw my bag and laughed. So snobby. ?

DON'T SHOP HERE - 25-30% markups!!I found a pretty little mug here that didn't have a price tag. The cashier had to look the price up during checkout and didn't tell me what it was, just turned the Apple Pay device around towards me... I was expecting it to run me ~$50 and it turned out to be nearly $400! My phone was already in Apple Pay mode, so by the time I saw the price, it was too late - the transaction had already gone through! No green button to approve the price or anything, nor did the cashier check to see if that price was OK! I was clearly shocked and looked at the cashier with my mouth wide open. When I asked him how he got that price / why it was so expensive, he went silent. After a few seconds of looking around, he gestured towards the mug section and said it was handmade in Paris out of black terra cotta. I was baffled because terra cotta is an incredibly inexpensive material, but I was honestly too stunned to do anything and was on a tight schedule, so I decided to leave and deal with it later. When I looked up the item online, I found that the boutique had marked it up from the original seller by nearly $100! When I went back today to try to return it, and they said they could only give me store credit! (Would've been good to know...) I mentioned to the cashier that it was marked up from the original price by nearly 30% and he said condescendingly that the price I used must have been in Euros. When I informed him I'd converted it to dollars when I did my calculation, he clearly didn't know what to say and just mumbled that their price was different from the original price because it was shipped from Paris.Unbelievable!! I'm furious that I got tricked into this $400 purchase, cannot get my money back, and the store has no explanation for their egregious pricing.

Decoupage heaven. There are two Derian shops close together. One has more household items and the other has the decoupage items. You won’t be disappointed.
