Want to share a completely mindblowing experience we just had with Lumber Boys. I've been a customer here for about five years, and recommended my SO go to pick up two pieces of wood for a small project. I didn't realize how different my experience and hers would be. She popped into Lumber Boys to pick up two simple pieces of wood--a 2x4 and a 1x12 with a specific rip cut. Nothing fancy - for reference, a 2x4 prime stud at Home Depot is $3.42 as of Feb 23, and a 1x12 common board is $23.22. Home Depot doesn't do rip cuts, but broadly I'd value it at about $10, maybe $15 for the Manhattan premium. Instead of offering what she needed, the salesperson tried to push pricey alternatives. They suggested a fancy red oak 2x4 for $125 - about 35x more than it needed to be to compelete the same project. And they wanted $66 for the 1x12 board, which was way overpriced too. When she called me for a second opinion, thinking that things didn't feel right, things got worse. The salesperson got pushy and aggressive, pressuring her that if she wanted something "beautiful", she needed to pay. I doubled checked the prices and story with him on speaker, and he cut me off, demanding to know if we were going to complete the purchase or not. Clearly, not everyone is going to have the same experience here. Their wood, with no cuts, is about double the price of Home Depot - it can be "acceptable" if you need to complete a project and don't want to waste an hour. This experience leaves a very bad taste in my mouth though - definitely feels like they took advantage of the fact that my SO didn't know lumber and tried to pressure sale her into something we obviously didn't need. I've since picked up the wood and ripped down a board for her, and we've spent under thirty bucks - six times cheaper than if she hadn't checked with me first. If you want to support local businesses, there are also much better options in the city who deliver - Midtown Lumber and Prince Lumber are both options I've used in the past with positive experiences and competent, knowledgable salespeople. I'll walk to Long Island City before I ever give this business a dollar of my money again.

Service is often rude at Lumber Boys. It's run by by a Father and son, a small store also catering to contractors but also basic hardware. They don't do housewares found at some larger stores. The father used to be nicer years ago. "The business originally dealt exclusively with lumber and specific products for New York City's carpenters and building trades, and over many years expanded into hardware".

Prices online are from 5 years ago and so I got sticker shock at the current prices. I wanted to support a local lumber supplier instead of Lowe's et al, however Steve had a pretty unfriendly attitude and even refused to email me a quote on request. Unable to change with the times, I don't see how they'll stay open for long. And now I have to go all the way to Lowe's.

I've been to this store a handful of times but each time is better than the last. I had a bizarre wall to work with for mounting a large tv and the guy knew exactly the solution. So thankful for their knowledge and expertise!

Third generation is running the shop now they are excellent. Opens up early in the morning closes at a normal time. They have everything that you may need. I needed an electrical switch. It was right up front. It's another way of saying convenience is some thing you pay for what it's in the neighborhood they're wonderful when you need them they never let you down. I recommend them very highly. I have been here for over four decades, and all they ever did was move from the east side of the street to the west side of the street. What a nice family run business that we should keep in New York City specially in Murray Hill.

I’ve used the Lumber Boys twice to cut and deliver plywood for DIY projects. They’re always quick and without fuss, plus they have a wide range of wood options. I appreciate them delivering all the way uptown enormously. I’ll use them again next time.

AVOID the owner, Steve, he is a rude and plain mean. He started out nice. I was having a hard time sourcing a part and he was able to find it for me. However, it ended up being the wrong one and unusable. I returned it and he got really upset, and said, and I quote "what a waste of time. I wished I never got involved. Now I'm stuck with it." I apologized profusely, I felt bad because yes, I wasted his time but then I thought, hang on.....he wasted my time too! He ordered the wrong part. He had the original part with him as he said he needed it to make sure he orders the right one and he still got it wrong! He expected my handyman to make it work, why should I do that? Why should I spend more money to make it work when it was HIS FAULT that he did not order the right item. And is it right then that I should be stuck with it and absorb the cost for his incompetency? Should I have said to his face that I wished I never step foot in lumber boys cuz he was a complete waste of my time? I didn't because I wanted to get my money back. The part was expensive. The way he was behaving, I wouldn't put it pass him to not want to accept the return. Against my better judgement, I apologized again before leaving and true to the small man that he is, Steve said "well, you could've offered to do something but you didn't so don't ever come back to my store." Well conveniently, he did not credit back the tax I paid on the item......he knew what he was doing. Keep the money, Steve. It's a small price to pay to never ever cross path with you.
