Billy Wilder’s romantic comedy starred Tom Ewell as a frustrated publisher of pulp fiction, whose wife and children escaped the Manhattan summer heat for Maine. Left alone in the simmering city, he befriends his upstairs neighbor, played by Monroe in one of her defining roles as a ditzy glamour model. For the subway scene, the unlikely couple had just been to the Trans-Lux theatre on Lexington, to see the “Creature from the Black Lagoon.” Hearing an approaching subway train, Monroe stepped onto the grate, having her skirt blown high by the train passing underneath, saying “ooh do you feel the breeze from the subway, isn’t it delicious.” Minds across the country were simultaneously blown.

If you love The Seven Year Itch and 50s cinema, this is one of the spots you can’t miss. There are no plaques or signs and no one bats an eye lid on this historic place, but that makes it even more special.

I didn’t see anything that indicated the exact spot.

Unfortunately no sign that this was Marilyn Monroe’s grate. It’s quiet sad, that you actually have to search for it and try to locate it by identifying pictures. This place could be way better, when there would actually be kind of like a little memorial of her.

What a waste of time. There’s nothing to see.

There's likely no plaque here because the shot they used in the movie was filmed in LA. The original shot filmed here was unusable due to the noise from the crowd as her skirt billowed up.

Arguably the most famous subway grate in the world (but really, what other contenders are there that don't involve mutant ninja turtles?), this unmarked & unheralded bit of Hollywood History can be found at the southwest corner of 52nd Street & Lexington Avenue. The breeze from a train passing below gave screen icon Marilyn Monroe a near wardrobe malfunction & created one of the most memorable moments in American cinema as she flirtaciously tried to keep it from revealing too much in 1955's "The Seven Year Itch."

The location is correct and exciting to visit, especially with the view of the Chrysler Building but the steel grates are NOT the originals and have obviously been replaced.

I wish there was some sort signage to show where the exact location of the grate js located. We had to guess based off of old picture and hope we got it right!
