This is more of a social service.. you are dealing with low income senior people with their senior pets and they have mobility issues or dementia and vast majority of these people have had these pets for 10 plus years, so you're not going to get a cuddle and play experience with the animals here. The objective is to make sure these people can keep their animals and you as a volunteer prevent neglect by fostering, vet transportation, litter maintenance and dog walking..

Don't trust Bo, who neglected my rabbit, destroyed the 2nd level of my hutch, and dismantled my violin and discarded the peg. She was the *only* person who had access to my apartment while I was in the hospital, and these issues were not present prior to my hospitalization days before. My violin had a missing peg, while the string was not broken, indicating somebody manually loosened the string and then discarded the peg. Even if a string busts, the peg stays in place; I have never experienced nor witnessed in 27 years a peg being displaced because of a broken string -- whether for violin or even cello. Further, the 2nd floor of my rabbit's hutch was dismantled and broken, although it's never had that problem and was beyond sturdy and stable. Not only that, but she used my personal dishes for the rabbit, when there were dishes for the rabbit, specifically. Not only that, instead of using the dishes, she used a measuring cup as the rabbit's dish -- literally 1 cup of food for over 3 days, which is insufficient. I thought I could trust her, but then discovered these discrepancies for which she could only be responsible. What a shame, I had even emailed her supervisor about what a good job she had done.

The mission at PAWS to help elderly/disabled individuals keep their pets by providing fostering, vet transport, dog walking and litter maintenance. Most of these people have had their animals for quite a number of years, so you're not going to get kittens and puppies if that's what you're after. This organization is an amazing testimony to how having an animal as a companion can sustain someone even in the midst of a diagnosis. Orientation is done via Zoom, so you don't have to leave your home and volunteering here can be very fulfilling.

Absolutely amazing organization — all the way from the mission and staff to the clients. I volunteered for PAWS NY when I lived in NYC and can’t say enough about what a wonderful experience it was. This is all paws down my favorite nonprofit.

Although they operate based on their mission statement to help the disabled but if you need immediate help ;for example they do not help. I found myself needing temp assistance for my cats as I just had hip surgery. I was told they cannot provided food/ litter unless you’re in the program. She also said she didn’t have a volunteer in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The director then told me to go to animal care @ control (East Fordham to get food!); no kidding that location is one of the most unsafest in the city. (I used to rescue so I know.) I would never send anyone there as it’s like a pantry where you stand in line for hours and only get one large bag of dry food. I have attended many of Paws fundraising events —no more as I know what they’re about.

PAWS NY fills an important gap in animal care AND elder care in NYC and they do it quietly, steadfastly and with generosity of heart. I am a big fan and I extoll their virtues to anyone who will listen. Good job, Rachel & Co.
