Always good...the au gratin potatoes side dish is one of the best

Great steak house with very good cuisine - nice, classic ambience with a large wine list, which also has some best buys for fair money. It is quite loud for European clientele.

I never had a bad meal at S & W and the service is excellent. An enjoyable experience that is well worth the money.
The landmark Smith & Wollensky in New York City is located on the corner of Third Avenue and 49th Street, serving outstanding steakhouse fare that features USDA Prime steaks, dry aged and butchered on-premise. Opened in 1977, the original Smith & Wollensky has set the standard by which all other steakhouses are judged. The New York Times agrees, calling the restaurant “a steakhouse to end all arguments” and Gourmet said this is the “quintessential New York steakhouse.” Although Smith & Wollensky has earned its reputation as the quintessential steakhouse, the menu is varied and offers many options beyond the signature exemplary steaks. Guests can also select from a variety of market-fresh seafood, poultry, and lamb. Delicious side dishes ...

Though Smith & Wollensky has become a national chain, the New York branch is the original. The restaurant is huge and retains a men's club vibe that gives but the slightest nod to décor. What theme there is focuses on Americana: ornithological prints, duck decoys and weather vanes. The most popular items on the menu are the sliced steak, the sirloin, the filet mignon, the prime rib and the triple lamb chops or veal chops, with hash browns on the side. If you've sworn off red meat, try one of the large lobsters. For dessert, in addition to the cheesecake, there's a terrific deep-dish apple pie. The wine list distinguishes Smith & Wollensky, which boasts a 50,000-bottle cellar, and from the prices it would seem that people who enjoy expensive steaks drink expensive wines. There are great old vintages of Bordeaux and California Cabernets, and plenty of oversize bottles, too.
