Robert Louis Stevenson Cottage

Hours: The Robert Louis Stevenson Cottage is a small museum in the home the author rented for about a year while seeking relief for his chronic illness in Saranac Lake. It is a tiny, quirky, but jam-packed memorial containing a wealth of artifacts and memorabilia from his life on display in the various rooms he occupied. The museum provides a great introduction to the remarkable author and a terrific overview of his life and works. A visit is significantly enhanced by the engaging and extremely knowledgeable resident curator, whose genuine love for the museum and encyclopedic knowledge of Stevenson makes the house and the author's time come alive. Listening to the curator explain the history adds much to the visit, and a personal tour is a special treat. Since the cottage is manned only by the resident curator, it is wise to contact the museum before visiting to confirm hours. Just reading and viewing the exhibits will take over an hour, making it a truly enjoyable and educational highlight.
