After trying to reach the national number of Social Security numerous times, I decided to go to the Durham Social Security Office. I did not have an appointment. I was pleasantly surprised when I had only waited about fifteen minutes....my number was called and I went to the window where a very pleasant, helpful gentleman was waiting to answer my questions and resolve my problem. I was with him for about ten minutes, and I left the SS office with all my concerns resolved. (All total, I was there for 25 minutes) I would give this agency ten stars if I could. I will never waste time again on the national Social Security phone number which either hangs up on you, or makes you wait for over an hour!

This office was great. I went in for a name change. Was there about 9:20am. I didn't have an appointment but had already submitted my name change form online (which saved time). Waited about 15 minutes and took less than 5 minutes once I got called back. Very efficient if your paperwork is ready and everyone was friendly!

The Durham office continues to be of NO help. Folks are too lazy or incomptent to call back. Ended up speaking to the Sanford office. Very nice well informed personnel, a pleasure to deal with. Soon this nine month adventure will end

Looks like the version of the passport application that they provide with the naturalization packet is outdated. Would suggest to fill the passport application online.

I called to get an answer about my ssr. I waited on hold for 18 minutes. Then they had the balls to hang up on me! So much for the government institution!!!!!

Edit - Jumping the rating up a bit for the speed at which the folks here assisted me when I called the main number instead of the number on the paper. While the initial lack of communication was quite frustrating, they have made up for it as much as possible by helping me today.Received a letter telling me to call or have my disability application denied after I'd already had a hearing. Have tried calling on three separate occasions. It's just plain wrong how the SSA can threaten to withhold benefits that I have had to fight for and not even get back to me in a timely manner.Social workers are supposed to do some good in the world, not screw over disabled people.

Racist Hispanic women asking over and over if the information I’m giving her is true yes it’s true I do have REAL and legal papers to be in the US not because I’m Hispanic means I’m illegal. Mujer hispana que me atendió era Racista. Me hizo sentir incómoda

Horrible who ever picked up the phone was absolutely no help. He was slightly rude and full of we can't. Vs helping me kno what could be done. It crazy that people like this work in position just to have a god complex.. smh

Efficient. Friendly. Helpful. I arrived at 12:45pm on a Wednesday without an appointment. Selected “other” for a name change, took a number and sat down. There were about 8 others in the waiting area. I was called back to a window and left within in 20 minutes! Very efficient and successful. The clerk answered all my questions and was very helpful. The security guard was also very friendly and helpful in answering my questions beforehand. The waiting room and bathrooms were very clean. Thank you!

Giving this office 5 stars because SSA really gets a bad rap. We arrived 15 minutes early. Security officer was very nice and helpful. Even chatting with someone he recognized as having come in before. They had 8 windows open right at 09:00 and got to us surprisingly quickly. The gentleman who helped us was polite, quick, yet thorough.

For customer support, the government wins hands down over many corporate helplines. Friendly and efficient, and the wait time isn't any worse than many corporate help lines. And they don't try to upsell you, or transfer you to the Department of Agriculture when you make a corny joke.

I've heard the horrors of the social security office, but the employee helping me today was so kind! I was here a few minutes before opening time at 9 am and though the room was fairly full it moved very quickly!

Absolutely pathetic customer service. I tried calling on behalf of an elderly individual to set up a meeting (to get more info on her Social Security payments) for her since the wait time is 45 minutes to an hour on the phone. As I tried to collect information for her, I was yelled at and hung up on for "asking too many questions".Not sure why Google requires 1-star as this was much worse.

I’ve been putting off coming because I thought it would be an all day thing. We didn’t have an appointment and we were seen 5 minutes after check in. The man who helped us was efficient and professional, I didn’t catch his name but wanted to say he did a great job.
