I used to like coming here when I lived in the area. They had good coffee and a great selection of books, and I know this place has meant a lot to the community over the years. But as someone who supports survivors of domestic violence, I can't in good conscience support this business (or its sister business, Congress bar) knowing that its current owner strangled their former partner/co-owner (look up the court case records and Reddit threads for the full story). I don't know either of them personally, but regardless of individual character, domestic violence is unacceptable and should not be tolerated.
Update: I'm aware of the charges and order mentioned in the manager's response. However, they also do not tell the whole story, and those charges were dismissed by the DA. I will not engage further or remove my review until the current owner is no longer affiliated with these businesses. There is no excuse for strangling your partner, and saying negative things about a business or person online is not the same as physical violence.

I was not served at this establishment. My arrival time was 1 hr before closing to meet a first-date. They didn't serve me when I first got there alone. In fact, they completely ignored me. When my date arrived 5 min later, we both went up to the counter and no one blinked an eye to take our order. I have never experienced this in my life from any business. So basically, I was denied service two times. Personally, I felt an air of discrimination in this instance, but I digress, they could have just been 'busy' or maybe they don't like money?

Beautiful store with lots of natural lighting. Great selection of predominantly black authors, also had a nice Pride section, so they seem queer friendly. There were lots of great selections about leftist politics as well. Loved my hibiscus refresher, I’m not a coffee person but I may get a cup when I go back.

Excellent coffees, nice staff, cozy bookstore and low-key welcoming vibe; love walking here mornings when visiting. Mocha latte is my fave. Muffins and cookies are available food items.

The food is delicious, and the service is great. And the coffee has an excellent aroma. But they close to early.

Fabulous chill vibe. Great place to reflect, write, read, and drink coffee. And if you need a book, they have those too! The owner, Bev, also owns a chill bar... which I haven't checked out, but I must definitely will now.

Our first time stopping inside to explore the Rofhiwa Book Cafe.Very nice and cozy decor with a wonderful selection of African literature to delight all ages.We purchased Black Boy Joy to add to our Great nephews' book collection. We're very excited to visit with Bev again during the New Year to take a closer look at the new material while we enjoy a wonderful cup of hot cocoa!!

Fun spot with a neat vibe. When we were there, they were still working out a few kinks. But I think this is going to be a great addition to the area.

Love this cafe, the atmosphere, people, and the drinks. This is my go-to spot to get some work done, have a meeting, or find a good book to read.
