This is the closest shared credit union branch for our bank in the area. Unfortunately, the service we received here was… none. They told us they weren’t a partner with our bank. We pushed, and they were. We asked to deposit a check that my was signing over to my husband and they said they can’t do that (they can). A total of an hour driving time wasted because the people who work here refuse to do their jobs.

Staff is always pleasant and efficient. They are available on site and by phone to answer questions.i like their community development emphasis and know they have made a difference for small business and individuals in Durham..

Typically CU's are better than large banks, but in this case, it's definitely not the case. The operation of SHCU is definitively subpar of other banks and credit unions that I have dealt with. It's not any one person. Most staff is helpful and pleasant. It's the entire operation of the institution. Account services does not/ cannot communicate directly with the bill pay department. An authorization that was released by a merchant is still held by the bank an additional 10 (ten) days. That is insane. I was a member of a different CU for 30 years. The headaches are making me regret using this one.

Friendly and helpful staff, BUT...the automated system needs to be more user friendly. You can't get through to speak to anyone. I've been without a debit card for 5 weeks now, totally unacceptable!! Not entirely the credit union's fault, but it should never take this long to re-issue a card!!

I went with Self Help in a pinch, but boy was I glad that they wound up being the place I went with. They were quick to help, courteous, and didn't have me wasting precious time. I initially by passed them as I'm not familiar with their institution or the customer service record but I am more inclined to think I might have come out on top in this situation, the larger financial institutions seem to have the same capacity for customer service and many are for lack of a better term "Too big for their britches" and often leave the customers feeling like they are just not quite up to snuff. I want to do business with a bank that treats me like they care about my finances as much as I do without the pushy attitude and the rush to get me out of the chair so they can slide someone else in behind me. I felt none of that at Self-Help and am thrilled I opted to give this place a chance.

I needed some quick help from Self-Help, and they were there!! I'm a member of another credit union, out of state, and Self-Help is a service center for that credit union. I was able to access most of funds made available to me, and will get the rest tomorrow. Thanks, Self-Help!!

The ATM is frequently down. If you need to make a deposit, don’t bet on being able to do so after hours because it’s reliably unreliable.

I closed my account today after over a decade of being with the credit union. They simply are not competitive in this market. Their current money market account offers 1.9%. Pretty good, but not really competitive when capital bank offers online banking with over 2%. I'm all for credit unions but this one has failed at every opportunity to retain customers. I remember a time when this bank would do anything to be more appealing to its clients. Times have certainly changed

I'm sure they help some folks but if you own a 10 year, local, profit turning, service business, that carries zero debt and has had 30% year over year growth (5 years straight), don't count on any help. Frustrating and disappointing is how I would describe the experience. If "self help" can't help you, it's a sad state of affairs. And they couldn't/wouldn't help us get a new van financed, even when we had 30% down and offered our other 5 vans as collateral.

I agree the customer service stinks and the girl who always answers the phone over there is rude and nasty. And when you complain about things to one staff member they always have an excuse for the other member as though they don't care. So sick of it. I'd rather go to Wells Fargo to get good service even though they are risky. Smh!

I really regret moving over to this credit union. If you're lucky, you'll have someone competent enough to realize you need your paycheck that you receive EVERY two weeks and not 5 days from now. If you're not lucky, you'll have someone incompetent, contemptuous and callous.

They are very unprofessional and slow. They closed my account for reasons unknown and now i cannot get in touch with anyone! I've called and left messages and no one is returning my calls. Talk about upset! I am very disappointed because things were going so well. Let you not use the account for a certain amount of time and then they close it!
